To help you understand a bit more, we\u2019ve put together this page to help explain some of the improvements we\u2019ve made.<\/p>\n<h2>Gender<\/h2>\n<h4><strong>Performers wishing to join Spotlight do not select a gender option when making an application.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>So, once a profile is up and running, clients are therefore asked to provide more information, including gender, to ensure casting directors can easily find them.\u00a0 An email reminder will also be sent to ensure this information is provided.<\/p>\n<p>Once a gender option is selected, Performers can decide if they wish to publicly display their gender on their profile or not and regardless of what they choose, we&#8217;ve made sure they\u2019ll still be found by casting directors searching for specific genders.<\/p>\n<h4>Understanding your clients&#8217; needs<\/h4>\n<p>Please encourage your clients to update how they would like to be found on Spotlight and discuss with you the gender roles they want to be submitted for in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Some questions that Equity suggests may be helpful when trying to understand your client\u2019s needs and casting aspirations when it comes to gender, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">What are your casting aspirations?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">How can I support you?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Should shared information remain confidential?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some people do not wish to disclose their gender for a variety of reasons so it\u2019s important you\u2019re both on the same page about what is and isn\u2019t ok to share with others.<\/p>\n<h4>What gender options are available in profiles?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Female<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Male<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Transgender &#8211; female\u00a0(selecting this option means performers will appear in searches for Female performers and for Transgender &#8211; female)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Transgender &#8211; male\u00a0(selecting this option means performers will appear in searches for Male performers and for Transgender &#8211; male<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Non-binary\u00a0(selecting this option means performers will appear in search results that don\u2019t include a gender filter and search results that have been filtered to only show non-binary performers. Non-binary performers won\u2019t appear in Female or Male performer searches unless they specify which searches they wish to appear in)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Custom\u00a0(If your client doesn\u2019t fit into one of the above options, they can select &#8216;Custom&#8217; and add more information should they wish. Your client can specify which of gender searches they wish to appear in)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Further information\u00a0(this is optional to complete but gives performers the opportunity to add any additional information e.g. genderfluid etc. Whatever is typed into this field is searchable by casting directors when using search filters to find performers).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Gender Terms<\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019re unfamiliar with the wording of some of the gender options, we\u2019ve included information about some of the more common terms used.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What does \u2018transgender\u2019 or \u2018trans\u2019 mean?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Transgender &#8211; which can be abbreviated to \u2018trans\u2019 &#8211; refers to those whose gender identity is different from the gender they were assigned at birth.<\/p>\n<p>Being trans is different for every person. Some trans people transition socially, legally and\/or medically, but not necessarily any or all of these. It may or may not involve a change in name and\/or pronouns (more on this below), hormone therapy and\/or surgery.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What does \u2018non-binary\u2019 mean?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Non-binary is a term used to describe people who do not solely identify as either male or female, or may identify as both, or neither. Some people don&#8217;t identify with any gender and some people&#8217;s gender changes over time.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What does \u2018cis\u2019 or \u2018cisgender\u2019 mean?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Cisgender relates to people who identify with their assigned birth sex and are not trans.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What does genderfluid mean?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Genderfluid relates to people who are flexible about their gender and don\u2019t confine themselves to any one gender. A genderfluid person\u2019s identity may change constantly between masculine, feminine, neither or both.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Using Pronouns<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Always use a person\u2019s correct pronouns. Some commonly-used pronouns are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">She\/her\/hers<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">They\/them\/theirs<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">He\/him\/his<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And there are many more.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure what to use, you can ask \u201cwhat pronouns do you use?\u201d or \u201ccan you remind me of your pronouns?\u201d but be mindful that a person is not obliged to disclose their preferred pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>We all make mistakes and if you find yourself using the wrong pronoun or name, apologise, correct yourself and then move on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.equity.org.uk\/media\/3465\/equity_lgbt-casting-guide.pdf\">You can read more about gender in Equity\u2019s guidelines for working with LGBT+ performers.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Your client&#8217;s gender and privacy<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s important to discuss with your clients if they wish for their gender to remain private, therefore we would advise that you both have a conversation\u00a0before\u00a0you, as the agent, make any changes to your client&#8217;s profile.<\/p>\n<p>Their decision should be respected so it is with this in mind that the gender section has been built so a performer can choose (once a gender option is selected) whether to have their gender appear on their profile or not.<\/p>\n<p>If a performer decides not to display their selected gender on their profile:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">their gender will only be visible to casting directors who actively search for performers using the gender filters<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">their gender will not be visible to casting directors if the performer&#8217;s profile is shared directly, or if the performer is searched for by name<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">their gender will be hidden when you view their profile from your client list so you&#8217;ll need to remember their gender option when submitting clients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a performer decides to make their selected gender visible then it will appear on their profile at all times but they always have the option to change this.<\/p>\n<h4>How to update your client\u2019s gender information<\/h4>\n<p>To change, remove or edit gender on your client&#8217;s profile, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Sign in and go to your client\u2019s profile<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">In the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Details\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0section, click the pencil icon and you\u2019ll be taken to the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Edit details\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0screen<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">In the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Basic\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0tab, scroll down to the section titled\u00a0\u2018How do you want to be found on Spotlight?\u2019<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">In the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Find me as\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0dropdown menu select the relevant option (i.e. Female, Male, Transgender &#8211; female, Transgender &#8211; male, Non-Binary or Custom) &#8211; By selecting one of these options, your client will appear in the relevant gender searches.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>\u2018Further information\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0is an optional field where additional gender information can be added should your client wish. For example, your client may want to add \u2018genderfluid\u2019 so they\u2019ll appear in any searches by casting professionals who are searching Spotlight using this specific term.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Under the section titled\u00a0\u2018Do you want your gender displayed on your profile?\u2019\u00a0there is a\u00a0<strong>\u2018No\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>\u2018Yes\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0option. By selecting \u2018No\u2019, your client\u2019s gender information will only be visible if casting professionals filter their search results by gender or a specific term. For example, if \u2018genderfluid\u2019 is typed in the \u2018Further Information\u2019 field and a casting professional searches for this term, your client\u2019s profile will be shown, even if the information isn\u2019t displayed publicly on their profile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Breakdown Gender Options<\/h4>\n<p>You will notice breakdowns are more detailed in terms of gender requirements. Some breakdowns will say \u2018any gender\u2019 and others will be a mixture of available choices.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, you may receive a breakdown that requires \u2018\u2019Male, Transgender &#8211; male performers\u2019\u2019. This means that the casting director is happy to receive suggestions from all performers who identify as male. If they are specifically looking for \u2018\u2019Transgender &#8211; males\u2019\u2019 then they will only select that option.<\/p>\n<h4>Suggesting clients who may not yet have selected a gender on their profile<\/h4>\n<p>If you have a client who has just joined Spotlight and not yet selected a gender then when suggesting them for roles clear the gender filter under \u2018suggest clients\u2019 by using the \u2018clear all\u2019 or \u2018x\u2019 next to the filter. You can also type their name above. We send twice weekly emails to all newly joined members to remind them to complete this information as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<h3>Disability<\/h3>\n<p>Your clients are now able to choose if they want to publicly publish their disability(ies) on their Spotlight profile or not. They can also add additional further information if they&#8217;d like and whatever is typed into this field can be searched by casting professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Casting professionals will be able to search and filter by a specific disability or all disabilities.<\/p>\n<h4>Your client\u2019s disability(ies) and privacy<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s important for you to discuss with your clients if they wish for their disability(ies) to remain private and therefore we would advise that you both have a conversation before you as the agent make any changes.<\/p>\n<p>The disability section has been built so a performer can choose whether to display their disability(ies) on their profile or not.<\/p>\n<p>If a performer decides not to display their disability(ies) from their profile:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>this information will only be visible to casting directors who actively search for performers using the disability filters<\/li>\n<li>their disability(ies) will not be visible to casting directors if the performer&#8217;s profile is shared directly or if the performer is searched for by name<\/li>\n<li>this information will be hidden when you view the profile from your client list. You&#8217;ll need to remember their disability option(s) when submitting clients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a performer decides to make their disability(ies) visible then it will appear on their profile at all times, however, they are able to change this at any time.<\/p>\n<h4>How to update your client\u2019s disability(ies) information<\/h4>\n<p>To change, remove or update any disabilities on your client\u2019s profile, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sign in and go to your client\u2019s profile<\/li>\n<li>In the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Details\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0section, click the pencil icon and you\u2019ll be taken to the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Edit details\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0screen<\/li>\n<li>In the tab titled\u00a0<strong>\u2018Basic\u2019<\/strong>, scroll down to the section titled\u00a0<strong>\u2018Disabilities\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Under the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Do you identify as Deaf or disabled\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0heading, select \u2018No\u2019 or \u2018Yes\u2019<\/li>\n<li>If you select \u2018Yes\u2019, you\u2019ll see more options revealed for you to choose from. You can select as many as is applicable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2018Further information\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0is an optional field where additional information can be added should your client wish. For example, by adding \u2018dyslexic\u2019, your client\u2019s profile will appear in search results by casting professionals who are searching Spotlight using this specific term.\u00a0Anything typed into this text field can be searched by casting directors<\/li>\n<li>Under the section titled\u00a0<strong>\u2018Would you like to display your disability(ies) and any further information you have included on your public profile?\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0there is a \u2018No\u2019 and \u2018Yes\u2019 option.\u00a0By selecting \u2018No\u2019, the disability(ies) information will only be visible if casting professionals filter their search results by disability or a specific term.
