{"id":935,"date":"2020-10-30T10:05:47","date_gmt":"2020-10-30T10:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/?p=935"},"modified":"2025-12-05T14:35:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T14:35:15","slug":"gender-appearance-disability-faqs-for-casting-professionals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/help-and-faqs\/gender-appearance-disability-faqs-for-casting-professionals\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender and Disability FAQs for Casting Professionals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019re committed to improving the experience for all Spotlight members and applicants, especially when it comes to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/the-small-print\/promoting-inclusivity-in-our-industry\/\">promoting inclusion and diversity in our industry<\/a>\u00a0so you\u2019ll\u00a0now see a wider range of options for gender and disabilities in profiles.<\/p>\n<p>Performers wishing to join Spotlight do not select a gender option when making an application and are therefore encouraged to update this information once their profile is up and running.<\/p>\n<p>Unless the role you are casting has very specific requirements we\u2019d encourage you to make your casting search as inclusive as possible.<\/p>\n<h4>Breakdowns<\/h4>\n<h4>Creating a Breakdown<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Click the\u00a0<strong>[Create a breakdown]<\/strong>\u00a0button on your account homepage<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Select an existing project folder or create a new one and give it a name<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">You\u2019ll be taken to the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Production Details\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0screen where you can add information about the production. In the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Contract type\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0field\u2019s dropdown, you&#8217;ll see new options for you to choose from<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Click the\u00a0<strong>[Next]<\/strong>\u00a0button to continue or\u00a0<strong>[Save and close]<\/strong>\u00a0if you want to come back to it later<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">By clicking\u00a0<strong>[Next]<\/strong>\u00a0you\u2019ll be taken to the \u2018Roles\u2019 screen where you can fill in the relevant information and use the new options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Breakdown Gender Options<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When creating your role(s), you&#8217;ll see the following options available for gender:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">You can choose from &#8216;Any&#8217; gender or select something &#8216;Specific&#8217;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">By clicking \u2018Specific\u2019, you\u2019ll see more options revealed (Female, Male, Transgender &#8211; Female, Transgender &#8211; Male, Non-Binary and Custom) so you can refine your search by selecting any gender requirements relevant to the role.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Selecting e.g. \u2018Male\u2019 only means you will consider suggestions from all who identify as \u2018Male\u2019. It is your choice how you wish to list your breakdown, but we have added the option of also selecting \u2018Transgender &#8211; Male\u2019 to allow you to reiterate your intention to cast inclusively.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">By selecting e.g. only \u2018 Transgender &#8211; male\u2018 you are looking for submissions from a transgender male with lived experience<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">You\u2019ll also see an open text field titled \u2018More information about gender\u2019, this is an optional field where you can type in any additional requirements you may have e.g. genderfluid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Please note that all selections you make and information added to the &#8216;More information about gender&#8217; field will appear on your published breakdown so please double-check these are correct before publishing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Finding Performers &#8211; Gender<\/h4>\n<p>Our search and filtering capabilities enable you to\u00a0 easily find non-binary and transgender performers, helping you cast a more diverse range of talent in your projects.<\/p>\n<p>When doing a search, you\u2019ll see a Gender filter so you can easily discover talent who have identified themselves using the available gender options, which include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Female<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Male<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Transgender &#8211; female\u00a0(performers who select this option will appear in searches for Female performers\u00a0and\u00a0searches for Transgender &#8211; female)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Transgender &#8211; male\u00a0(performers who select this option will appear in searches for Male performers\u00a0and\u00a0searches for Transgender &#8211; male)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Non-Binary\u00a0(performers who have selected this option will appear in search results that don\u2019t include a gender filter\u00a0and\u00a0search results that have been filtered to only show non-binary performers. Non-binary performers won\u2019t appear in female or male performer searches unless they specify that they want to be found here)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Custom\u00a0(This option can be used by performers who do not identify with one of the above options)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Further information\u00a0(additional information can be added in this open text box for any specific gender requirements you&#8217;re looking for).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Some points to note:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Once selected,\u00a0Performers have the option to share their gender on their profile or to hide it from public view.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">If a performer has chosen\u00a0not\u00a0to publicly post their gender, you\u2019ll still be able to find them by using the gender filter.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">If a performer has chosen\u00a0not\u00a0to publicly post their gender, you will not see their gender if the performer&#8217;s profile is directly shared with you, added to a shortlist or if you search for them by name.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">To find the greatest number of appropriate performers, you should actively filter on gender.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019d encourage you to consider casting transgender performers in both trans and cis roles. If you\u2019re not familiar with some of the gender terms used, Equity has a useful resource where you can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/the-small-print\/promoting-inclusivity-in-our-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read more about gender terms and working with LGBT+ performers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Finding Performers &#8211; Disability<\/h4>\n<p>Performers are now able to choose whether they want to publish their disability(ies) on their Spotlight profile, whilst still allowing you to search and filter by a specific disability or all disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>When doing a search, you\u2019ll see a Disability filter so you can easily discover talent who have identified themselves as such.<\/p>\n<p>Performers can also add additional \u2018further information\u2019 which is searchable.<\/p>\n<p>Some points to note:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Performers can choose whether to display their disability(ies) on their public profile or not.<\/li>\n<li>If a performer decides to hide this information from public view, you\u2019ll still be able to find them by using the disability filter.<\/li>\n<li>If a performer has hidden their disability(ies) from their profile and their account is shared directly with you, added to a shortlist or if you search for them by name you will\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0see their disability(ies) displayed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To find the greatest number of appropriate performers, you should actively filter on disability.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spotlight supports inclusive casting.
