You have a community, and we are waiting to embrace you with open arms.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s for allowing each lesbian and queer woman\u2019s journey to be heard and accepted and that\u2019s why It\u2019s essential that those people around the globe see themselves represented on screen and within the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that in mind, I curated this list of films that authentically portray lesbian and queer women, our relationships, dynamics and lives. I chose these films because they show various stages of lesbian life and dynamics: self-discovery, forbidden love, navigating a political landscape, and simply enjoying ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a time when it\u2019s proving more difficult to get independent films made, what I also love about this list is that most of the films are independently produced. Here are some gems in the lesbian film medium.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that in mind, I curated this list of films that authentically portray lesbian and queer women:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>But I\u2019m a Cheerleader<\/em>\u00a0(1999)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I\u2019m a Cheerleader<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u2018Megan\u2019 (Natasha Lyonne) is a stereotypical teenage American cheerleader with a handsome football-playing boyfriend. However, something isn\u2019t right. She isn\u2019t crazy about this all-round, superstar boyfriend and others around her can see that she\u2019s different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When her parents send her to a conversion camp, she realises it\u2019s because they think she\u2019s a lesbian. Wait, what? But she\u2019s a cheerleader \u2013 she can\u2019t be gay! So starts her journey of self-discovery when she meets \u2018out\u2019 teenage lesbian Graham (played by queer icon Clea DuVall).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This satirical comedy has to be one of the top lesbian films and is a must for Lesbian Visibility Week as it\u2019s filled with queer delight and sapphic royalty, directed and created by lesbian legend, Jamie Babbit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>Aim\u00e9e &amp; Jaguar<\/em> (1999)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set in Berlin during World War II, the story follows \u2018Felice\u2019 (Maria Schrader), a Jewish woman using a false name and working as an undercover journalist, and \u2018Lilly\u2019 (Juliane Koehler), who\u2019s married to a Nazi officer and a mother of four. When Lilly\u2019s husband is away, the two begin an intense affair with beautiful love scenes that are almost poetic between the two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aim\u00e9e &amp; Jaguar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of my favourite sapphic dramas and I can\u2019t create a lesbian film watchlist without it. It\u2019s one of the most beautiful lesbian love stories on film. It\u2019s a must-watch, but make sure you have tissues at the ready.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>My Summer of Love<\/em> (2004)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the UK, we have the 2004 film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Summer of Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, set in the Yorkshire countryside. It\u2019s a tale of sexual exploration between two young women from opposite backgrounds. Working-class \u2018Mona\u2019 (Natalie Press) meets pampered and entitled \u2018Tamsin\u2019 (Emily Blunt), and over one summer, they learn and grow from each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Summer of Lov<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e is a great watch that shines a light on navigating teenage lesbian love from different class backgrounds. It\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo &amp; Juliet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meets <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar Rush,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Mona taking us on a journey of a glorious yet painful first love.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>Bottoms<\/em> (2023)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This fun, high school comedy from the US is super-cute and very queer. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottoms<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a silly farce about two unpopular queer students fighting to have their first sexual experience before graduation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018PJ\u2019 (Rachel Sennott) and \u2018Josie\u2019 (Ayo Edebiri) start a women&#8217;s self-defence club and become high school celebrities, but what the school doesn\u2019t know is that they set the club up to seduce their cheerleader crushes \u2018Brittany\u2019 (Kaia Gerber) and \u2018Isabel\u2019 (Havana Rose Liu).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a silly romcom that doesn\u2019t take itself too seriously, and who doesn\u2019t need a bit of that sometimes?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>Blue Jean<\/em> (2022)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set in Newcastle in 1988, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Jean<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stars Rosy McEwen as \u2018Jean\u2019, a closeted PE teacher during the proposal of the Section 28 legislation, and Lucy Halliday as the student threatening to expose her sexuality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure would lose Jean the job she loves so she decides to lead a double life, keeping her partner \u2018Vivian\u2019 (Kerrie Hayes) and her queer life separate from her working life and causing tension in her relationship and friendship groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Jean<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of my favourite recent lesbian dramas. It\u2019s a fictionalised story based on the experiences of a real lesbian teacher during that time and a reminder of the fight that we have had to continue against governments and people. 1988 was not that long ago \u2013 this is a reminder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written by Georgia Oakley and local queer hires in the smaller supporting roles give this film excellent authenticity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>D.E.B.S.<\/em> (2004)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This film packs a serious lesbian icon (Holland Taylor) into an action comedy about spies-in-training where a relationship forms between supervillain \u2018Lucy Diamond\u2019 (Jordana Brewster) and top spy \u2018Amy\u2019 (Sara Foster). <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D.E.B.S.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> follows the underground crime-fighting academy whose only mission is to save the world with each character bringing their own unique, sometimes silly, skill to the secret agent foursome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D.E.B.S.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a favourite fun and fabulous queer film \u2013 think of a queer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlie\u2019s Angels<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and you\u2019re on the right track. With a clever script written by lesbian writer and director Angela Robinson and the addition of sapphic legend Holland Taylor, this is a must-see.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>Carol<\/em> (2015)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set in 1950s New York, we follow the story of \u2018Therese\u2019 (Rooney Mara), a young photographer falling in love with \u2018Carol Aird\u2019 (Cate Blanchett), and how they navigate their relationship in a time when LGBTQI relations were illegal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carol<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a beautiful and sometimes heart-breaking love story between two women whose connection was at first sight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both characters are living in unhappy heterosexual relationships until they find each other and their love blossoms. Lesbian sweetheart Sarah Paulson also stars in the film, playing Carol\u2019s friend \u2018Abby\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Lesbian Short Films<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The great thing about sapphic short films is that it\u2019s usually queer writers, directors and producers who produce authentic queer female shorts, providing them with authenticity. When visiting LGBTQI festivals, lesbian stories tend to be forgotten and are very few or so hidden in the programme that you struggle to find them, but here are some of my favourites from the last few years:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>Twofold<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written by Toto Bruin and directed by Ella Greenwood.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twofold<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is shot in one take and uncovers and explores an old encounter between \u2018Allie\u2019 (Phoebe Campbell) and \u2018Erin\u2019 (Rebecca Calder). You watch their dynamic unravel in real time, which is gloriously uncomfortable to see. It&#8217;s a tense yet beautiful watch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of those rare films that stays with you for a long while after you watch it. It\u2019s utterly brilliant and deserving of all the praise it received on the festival circuit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em>From A to Q<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written and directed by Emmalie El Fadil.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From A to Q<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a cute coming out and coming of age short about two high school friends who discover their true feelings for each other after \u2018Alex\u2019 has a dream where she confesses her love. &#8216;Alex\u2019 (Sophie Rivers) and \u2018Kayla\u2019 (Holly Ashman) star and their chemistry is great to watch as they try to navigate their mutual feelings without ruining their long-term friendship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short film is shot and edited really well and looks great.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><em>F**KED<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written by Meg Salter and directed by Sara Harrak.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set in a supermarket, this short film starring Rosalind Eleazar as \u2018Dani\u2019 and Meg Salter as \u2018Jess\u2019 is about open relationships in a queer female couple and explores what the \u2018rule book\u2019 is for such things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F**KED<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a funny film that did well on the festival circuit with two great actors attached. Meg\u2019s writing really shines in this quirky short.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve worked as an actor in the industry for over 20 years. Around 15 years ago, I started going to LGBTQI film festivals and was shocked at the lack of lesbian and queer female content. So much so that I wrote and produced my own short film called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life in Colors<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a decade-spanning story of lesbian love during the 1940s, when women and queer people had to conform to society and to a certain way of life. It went on to win awards at various lesbian and queer film festivals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its release in 2015, the landscape of lesbian films, television and short films has changed. Back then I rarely saw myself represented on screen but in recent years it\u2019s wonderful to start seeing lesbian\/queer female characters turning up in all forms of media. Lesbian and queer females\u2019 stories were being heard and seen in film festivals, more lesbian and queer female writers and directors were telling their stories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this year, I\u2019m again seeing a lack of lesbian stories being told across film festivals. Is that because shorts and independent films are struggling to get funding? Perhaps. But what I do know is lesbian and queer female stories need to continue to be told.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our stories are important and we need to keep telling them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a story, create it, make it, show it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy Lesbian Visibility Week! <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Celebrate Lesbian Visibility Week with our curated list of must-watch films showcasing lesbian and queer women&#8217;s lives, relationships, and self-discovery.
