With so many monologues out there, you need to play an active role in narrowing down the choices with your own interests and preferences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our members often ask where to find monologues, so at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/spotlight-prize\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotlight Prize 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we spoke to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/spotlight-prize-2024-winners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotlight Prize winners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and finalists about their tips for finding monologues. Search by Topic<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you start your search, it can be a good idea to decide on a topic or theme for the monologue that you\u2019re interested in so you feel connected to the piece.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Penny Morris<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cI look up topics of plays that I&#8217;m interested in talking about, and also, as an artist, what I want to talk about. If you do a monologue that you are extremely interested in, you&#8217;re naturally going to gravitate and perform it well.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Performed \u2018Glitter Punch\u2019 by Lucy Burke)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3>2. Look at Work from Writers You Like<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, looking through the work of writers you like is an excellent way to narrow down your search. Take a look at their body of work to see if there\u2019s anything they\u2019ve written that you might not necessarily know about but could work well as a monologue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gabrielle K. Appiah<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cIf there&#8217;s a writer that I&#8217;ve been reading, maybe what I&#8217;ve read doesn&#8217;t feel like it fits me, [but] they might have other really interesting things.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performed \u2018Wonderboy\u2019 by Ross Willis)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Jessica Oppong<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cI&#8217;ll find a writer and see the other pieces of her work. Use writers as a reference to the styles of work that you like.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performed \u2018Chewing Gum Dreams\u2019 by Michaela Coel)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Scott Bowden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cI find one of the playwrights I know, look him up, go through the plays, and just go through until I find a big chunk and read it. If it\u2019s not good enough, I&#8217;ll go to another play.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performed \u2018The Man\u2019 by James Graham)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Dua Roberts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cI&#8217;m lucky to be from [Iceland], so I can just sneak into screenwriter&#8217;s DMs to be like, \u2018Hey, do you have something for me?\u2019\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Performed \u2018Seven Fairy Tales of Shame\u2019 by Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3>3. Browse Bookshops and Libraries<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bookshops and libraries usually have plenty of plays in stock and allow you to read the material in depth to better understand whether the monologue is right for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Callum Alexander-Smith<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cI&#8217;m from Glasgow, so I just go into the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland library and have a look. Flip through other libraries and things like that. It sounds very retro and old-school, but it does actually work. And Waterstones as well. Go to Waterstones and read something from the drama section there.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Performed \u2018Holes\u2019 by Tom Basden)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Niamh-Ella McCann<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cI go to the bookstore and I sit on the floor, and I just read everything for hours. Monologue books, plays. Watch and Read Plays<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s vital to keep exposing yourself to new work as an actor. When you go to see new plays or read new scripts, keep an eye out for any scenes that might work as a monologue for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trudy Akobeng<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cGoing to watch plays and then just remembering, &#8220;Oh, I liked that,&#8221; and just noting that and going to find the scripts for yourselves.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Performed \u2018Typical Girls\u2019 by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Emma Symmonds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cRead lots of plays or go see plays, and be like, \u2018Oh, that really stood out to me. I maybe should be looking at that.\u2019\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Performed \u2018Anatomy of a Suicide\u2019 by Alice Birch)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Bethany Wooding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cTry and go see stuff, even if it&#8217;s just going to see something for a couple of quid somewhere local because you&#8217;ll find the things that you want to do.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Performed \u2018Cancer Time\u2019 by Gary Owen)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3>5. Use Drama Online<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a drama student, you should have access to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dramaonlinelibrary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drama Online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s extensive library of plays, scripts and other work. Even if you\u2019re not a drama school student, you can still search the library for plays and monologues using keywords, gender and word count.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You won\u2019t be able to read the full work online without a subscription, but you\u2019ll still be able to find plays, see their summaries and the name of their writer and use this information as a starting point to do more research or find the play in a bookshop or library to read from.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>6. Look at Online Resources<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The internet is full of useful information, and various platforms like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scribd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can assist you in your search.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Zannie Benfield<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cI like Scribd \u2013 that&#8217;s an online library. Normally, if I&#8217;ve seen a play that I really enjoyed, I&#8217;ll then look at the playwright&#8217;s other plays and have a shift through.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Performed \u2018(BLANK)\u2019 by Alice Birch)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Alfanso May<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cOnline. That&#8217;s where I tend to find most good pieces. Look for Social Media Recommendations<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media can also be useful for interacting with other performers and seeing their recommendations for great plays and monologues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Alyssa Thabisile Sibanda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cSometimes [I search] YouTube. Use Spotify\u2019s Recommendations System<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you play a song on Spotify, it has a clever recommendation system that will share other songs similar to the one you\u2019re listening to. It\u2019s a great way of discovering new work that may feature a monologue that\u2019s just right for your next audition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Lara Dailey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cOn Spotify, if you like a song, you can go to the radio of the song and it will play similar pieces or pieces by the same composers, and usually I end up finding completely new shows that I&#8217;ve never even heard of before because of that and it&#8217;s great.
