Six simple ways to avoid the most common self-tape pitfalls to ensure you\u2019re sending off your best work every time.<\/h2>\n

Self-taping has become a permanent fixture of a performer’s life, but it doesn’t have to be a source of stress. Whether you’re submitting for a commercial or a lead in a feature film, the goal remains the same: professionalism. The reality is that casting professionals have limited time; if they\u2019re distracted by a vertical frame or a messy background, they might miss the nuance of your performance.<\/p>\n

Here are six simple tips to ensure you\u2019re not making these mistakes:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Film Your Self-Tapes in Landscape<\/h3>\n

Self-tapes should be landscape as standard, so ensure you\u2019re never filming them in portrait, even if you\u2019re using your phone!<\/span><\/p>\n

Think of your tape as a TV or film screen – you\u2019d hate to watch a blockbuster in portrait!<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Don\u2019t Look Into the Camera<\/h3>\n

A lot of performers aren\u2019t sure where they should look in a self-tape. Imagine your character in their scene \u2013 who are they speaking to? Pick a spot where that other person is – just off camera – and fix your eyes on where their eye line would be, as if you\u2019re talking to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t look straight into the camera (unless it\u2019s been requested in the brief), and don\u2019t turn your whole head away to the imaginary person – casting professionals want to see your face!<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Don\u2019t Move Around Too Much<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s understandable that when you\u2019re performing, you want to move around. But with a self-tape, less is more, so try not to move around too much. It will be distracting for the casting director, and you don\u2019t want anything to distract from your acting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make a decision before you film \u2013 whether you\u2019re sitting or standing \u2013 and stay there. Otherwise you\u2019ll need to keep moving the camera.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Avoid Distracting Backgrounds<\/h3>\n

Likewise, don\u2019t film your self-tape in front of a background that could steal attention away from your performance. Pick a plain, neutral-coloured wall to stand in front of with as much natural light as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t have a wall like this, then a cheap hack is to hang up a piece of material or a bed sheet in front of your background.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Frame Yourself Properly<\/h3>\n

You\u2019re the focus of the self-tape, so why would you not want to be in the frame? Having too much space above or to one side of you will be distracting, and could take the casting professional out of your performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Don’t Imitate Well-Known Performers<\/h3>\n

Always try to make a piece your own. Even if you\u2019re filming a monologue that\u2019s well-known because of a certain actor\u2019s version of it, don\u2019t try to do it like they did. The casting director will just end up comparing you to that performance the whole time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
