This task is especially important when the film is based on a beloved, multi-award-winning West End show like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matilda the Musical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the heart of the film adaptation of the West End hit<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, who have some incredible experience under their belts. Lucy has been involved in the casting for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Casual Vacancy, Maleficent, The Hundred Foot Journey <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and more. Emily\u2019s impressive credits include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ready Player One, Fast &amp; Furious: Hobbs &amp; Shaw<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atomic Blonde.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-winners-of-the-cdg-awards-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDG Awards 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we spoke with these powerhouse casting directors and asked them about their self-taping advice for Young Performers, tips for parents, and their experience working on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matilda the Musical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With all of this success, it was only a matter of time before it made a new debut, this time on the big screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann are responsible for the film\u2019s excellent Young Performer casting \u2013 including Alisha Weir as the titular \u2018Matilda Wormwood\u2019 \u2013 and were recognised for this with the Best Child Casting (All Media) award at the CDG Awards 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s always particularly gratifying to be recognised by your peers,\u201d says Emily. \u201cThe people who know how hard you work and what the job entails.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucy Bevan acknowledges that the job came with unique pressure to get the casting just right. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matilda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is such a long-running [show],\u201d she says. \u201cObviously, it was a film when we worked on it, but before that, a theatre event, that means so much to so many people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Casting Young Performers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding the right child to cast isn\u2019t without its challenges and although Spotlight provides casting directors like Lucy and Emily with various ways of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/spotlight\/tips-to-help-be-found-in-spotlight-search\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seeking out new talent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it can still be a lengthy process. When casting such a well-known character as \u2018Matilda\u2019, you\u2019ve got to get it just right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike adult performers, child actors haven\u2019t always had years and years to hone their acting skills, so casting directors need to look beyond that and identify their raw talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucy Bevan finds it rewarding, saying, \u201cWhen a child comes in and probably isn&#8217;t that good, but you see something, and [say], \u201cLet&#8217;s get them back in, there&#8217;s something there.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also enjoys \u201cthe satisfaction of when you give notes to the child and they improve, so that by the time they meet the director, they are what you need them to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Brockmann agrees, saying she finds it \u201creally gratifying when you find a child who&#8217;s never done [acting] before but is just brilliant and their personality shines through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was actually the case when they were casting for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matilda the Musical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as two of the Young Performers who got roles in the film had never done anything like it before.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-taping Advice for Young Performers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s common practice to be asked to self-tape if you\u2019re applying for a role. Some of them won\u2019t give you much time to prepare, so you must use your time wisely and focus on the right things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Brockmann advises, \u201cMake sure that we can see and hear you clearly. It is honestly the most important thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this means you should ensure your sound and video quality are good, casting directors won\u2019t expect your self-tape to be in high definition with perfect, production-quality sound. They\u2019re requesting the self-tape because they want to see and hear you in action as an actor, not an editor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucy Bevan\u2019s advice is to \u201cGo for it. Put your own take on it because you don&#8217;t know what anyone&#8217;s looking for. If you are looking through an awful lot of self-tapes, which we do, if someone has got a point of view and makes a choice and it&#8217;s interesting, it might not be right, but it&#8217;s enough to make you want to see them again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A self-tape is a chance to make an impression on a casting director, who famously have good memories. Even if you don\u2019t get the role you\u2019ve applied for, a memorable self-tape means the casting director might think of you when casting other roles in the future, which is just as much a victory as getting the initial role.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advice for Parents and Guardians of Young Performers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the parent or guardian of a young performer, there\u2019s much you can do to assist your child in pursuing their acting career. While the important stuff \u2013 like submitting your child for roles and negotiating contracts \u2013 will be done by their agent, it\u2019s essential to be as knowledgeable as possible about the industry you\u2019re sending your child into.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While our website offers excellent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/young-performers\/young-performer-resources-industry-hub\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advice and resources for parents and young performers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, covering everything from headshots to profile tips to safeguarding, Lucy Bevan also recommends that parents, \u201cMake sure that [their child] stays close to their mates at home when they\u2019re not on set.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMake sure they carry on with school and are with all their friends,\u201d she adds. \u201cIt&#8217;s a slightly strange environment, a film set, for a child, because it&#8217;s loads of adults.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entertainment industry is a fantastical world, but it won\u2019t be your child\u2019s everyday reality.
