Think About the Audience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you perform your monologue, it won\u2019t be in the privacy of your room \u2013 or wherever else you may have been practising it. You\u2019ll be performing in front of an audience that may well include the agent who\u2019ll approach you for representation or the casting director who\u2019ll give you your next job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when choosing your monologue, think about what the audience will enjoy watching.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosalind says, \u201cI personally think the [monologues] that work very well are the ones when you&#8217;re talking to someone.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will capture the audience\u2019s attention, as they\u2019ll feel like they\u2019re that other person and as a result, part of the scene. Addressing your monologue to another character can also give you ideas for delivery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is your relationship to this other character? How have they made you feel? What are you trying to achieve through your monologue addressed to them?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are all questions that can help drive and define your performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Stay Within Your Comfort Zone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an actor, your job is to step into a character\u2019s shoes and bring them to life. This will lead you to experiences and situations that are far removed from your own life and you may wish to explore this further and further with each performance. However, your acting showcase may not necessarily be the best time to do this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosalind says, \u201cI know we are actors, and we want to really do things that are very different and separate to us. You have plenty of time to do that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just feel like you should do something that you are comfortable with,\u201d she adds. \u201cAnd that you feel represents you in some ways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Choose Something That Represents You<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosalind\u2019s final piece of advice is to choose something, \u201cYou feel a real connection to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/where-to-find-monologues-for-auditions-and-showcases\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so much choice when it comes to monologues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so you\u2019ll want to pick something that speaks to you on some level, something you understand and like.
