You\u2019ve learned the tricks of the trade, made lots of connections with other actors and are finally ready to start putting your new qualification to the test and land some roles.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s important to have a good understanding of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/?categoryTags=the%20industry\">the industry<\/a>\u00a0and to manage your expectations of how soon you\u2019ll be cast. Everyone\u2019s acting journey is different and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/how-to-deal-with-career-envy\/\">not getting a role or agent the moment you\u2019ve left drama school<\/a>\u00a0doesn\u2019t make you a failure.<\/p>\n<p>We asked directors, casting directors and experienced actors what advice they had for graduates to help get their acting career off to a successful start. Here\u2019s what they shared:<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsiveEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embededYoutube\"><iframe id=\"734960483\" title=\"Starting Out Successfully as a Graduate\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sTZInReudMs?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fspotlight.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2257647_115=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-7=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-12=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-17=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Keep Up a Routine<\/h3>\n<p>At drama school, you had a schedule filled with classes, rehearsals and training to keep you busy. Now, though, it\u2019s up to you to manage your own time and director Shimmy Marcus (<em>SoulBoy<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Headrush<\/em>) warns graduates to be conscious of this:\u00a0\u201cThe most important thing facing a graduate is the lack of structure, organisation, and discipline. They\u2019ve gone from [about] 50 hours a week of training and doing it, to suddenly nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Try to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/lifestyle-wellbeing\/an-actors-guide-to-routine\/\">create a routine<\/a>\u00a0that keeps you active and gives you plenty of time to develop your acting skills whilst auditioning. Shimmy advises,\u00a0\u201cThink of yourself as an athlete, constantly practising, constantly keeping fit and such, so you\u2019re not just waiting for the phone to ring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having a routine to follow will also have positive effects on your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/?tags=mental%20health\">mental health<\/a>\u00a0as it will help distract your mind from lingering on auditions and when you\u2019ll hear back from casting directors.<\/p>\n<h3>Practise Your Acting<\/h3>\n<p>An actor\u2019s journey to master their craft is never-ending. Even though you\u2019ve graduated, you can still learn a lot, so keep practising and seeking opportunities to develop new skills. This can take the form of acting classes and workshops or getting together with your actor friends to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/how-to-make-a-showreel\/\">make showreels<\/a>\u00a0and practice scenes.<\/p>\n<p>Shimmy Marcus suggests you,\u00a0\u201cKeep demoing scenes, shooting scenes with friends, even shooting self-tapes on a regular basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doing this will ensure you\u2019re polished and ready when a real\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/interviews-podcasts\/preparing-for-auditions-and-self-taping\/\">audition or self-tape request comes your way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe acting muscle can get very rusty between auditions,\u201d\u00a0Shimmy warns.\u00a0\u201cSo, you have to find a way to keep practising that muscle.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Make the Most of Every Opportunity<\/h3>\n<p>Over the course of your acting career, you\u2019ll be offered jobs that you decide not to take. When you\u2019re first starting out though, it\u2019s a good idea to say yes to every opportunity just to get the experience. This is what actor Mark Bonnar (<em>Shetland<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Operation Mincemeat<\/em>) suggests:\u00a0&#8220;Choose every opportunity you can to do your craft, whether that is an audition or a reading or anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gaining this experience early on is a good way to get to grips with how the industry works and will help you identify the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/know-your-casting-type\/\">types of work you\u2019d rather go for<\/a>\u00a0in the future. It will also be useful when you get an opportunity to audition for your ideal role as you\u2019ll have used previous auditions to familiarise yourself with the process \u2013 which in turn, will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/interviews-podcasts\/tips-for-controlling-nerves\/\">help you be less nervous<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Be Yourself<\/h3>\n<p>With so many actors in the industry, it\u2019s vital to embrace your individuality to stand out from the crowd. It may be tempting to research how high-profile actors found their way to stardom and try to replicate that, but actress Vicky McClure (<em>Line of Duty<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Trigger Point<\/em>) advises,\u00a0\u201cContinue to do it your way. Do not try and carbon copy what&#8217;s already been done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t look to other actors for inspiration during your career. Vicky says,\u00a0\u201cYou can be inspired by people, and that&#8217;s brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just don\u2019t lose sight of who you are as an actor.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, casting director Andy Pryor CDG (Doctor Who,\u00a0Life on Mars) shares:\u00a0\u201cJust keep at it. Keep working hard. Get prepared. Be as prepared as you can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t easy to build a successful acting career but keep growing as an actor, keep putting yourself forward for auditions and keep up to date with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/?tags=news\">what\u2019s happening in the industry<\/a>.
