Whether it\u2019s in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/rooms-and-studios\/studios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our new studios<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> waiting for your audition, on stage, or the moment before a director yells, \u201cAction!\u201d we\u2019ve all experienced it \u2013 from award-winning, experienced actors to drama school graduates at their first showcase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We spoke with actors Imelda Staunton (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Josette Simon (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broadchurch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Alex Jennings (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Crown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), as well as previous Spotlight Prize winners and nominees, about how to overcome nerves before a performance. Here\u2019s what they shared:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"responsiveEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embededYoutube\"><iframe id=\"587738437\" title=\"How To Deal With Nerves\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WqOYhMdk-Hs?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fspotlight.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2257647_115=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-7=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-12=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-17=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Channel Your Nervous Energy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotlight Prize nominee Connor Maguire said it best: \u201cYou\u2019re always going to be nervous, and I think it\u2019s best to always embrace it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In essence, when you feel nervous, don\u2019t let it consume you. Imelda Staunton points out that nerves are \u201cyour body getting you ready.\u201d Use them as fuel for your performance. \u201cAll my nerves are used up in rehearsal thinking, \u2018I can\u2019t do it!\u2019\u201d Imelda adds. \u201cBut use nerves as a really good energy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t try to deny your nerves. Spotlight Prize nominee Simon Phipps (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sherwood<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) says, \u201cI think you just have to acknowledge that they\u2019re there, but you\u2019re not going to listen to them for today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember Your Preparation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nerves are a product of our fight-or-flight instincts, which may kick in when we\u2019re panicked or stressed. However, when you\u2019re about to perform, remember that you have no reason to be either of these things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotlight Prize nominee Harmony Daniel (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boudicca<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) urges actors to \u201cremember that work you\u2019ve done.\u201d You\u2019re not about to step on stage without learning your lines or with no acting talent to rely on. You\u2019ve trained, you\u2019ve practised, and you\u2019ve put in the work to ensure your performance will be the best it can be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo matter what happens, you\u2019ve done the work,\u201d Harmony says. \u201cThat\u2019s what you can rely on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on Your Character<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll never entirely stop being nervous when acting. \u201cThe terror and the horror never go away,\u201d says Alex Jennings, who knows a thing or two, considering his three BAFTA nominations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotlight Prize winner Lucie Sword (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rare Beasts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tells us to \u201cstick to knowing what you want as the character and the more you can gear into that [\u2026] you can wash away those nerves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your mind is focused on the persona of your role, it takes the attention away from the knots in your stomach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re struggling to connect with your character, take a look at our article on <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/creating-compelling-characters\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating compelling characters<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help you develop a better understanding of them.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider Your Nutrition<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the days leading up to your big moment, we\u2019d recommend limiting your caffeine and sugar intake. Both are bad for your gut bacteria, which, if dysfunctional, can bring on that doomsday anxiety like a train.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your body can go into what is known as a hyperglycaemic state, also known as having high blood sugar. This happens when your body doesn\u2019t have enough insulin. Consuming these substances in excess are proven to contribute to anxiety and should be avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a look at our <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/nutrition-tips-for-actors\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nutrition tips for preventing fatigue and injury<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathe<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may seem obvious, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/breath-practice-for-performers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breathing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be the most powerful tool you have for mastering your emotions. Proven to relax the nervous system and release toxins from the body, filling your lungs with oxygen is an amazing way to reset the body and put you back in touch with yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotlight Prize winner Francesco Piancentini-Smith (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waterloo Road<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) advises, \u201cTake deep breaths [and don\u2019t] think about it,\u201d and Spotlight Prize nominee Charlotte Wyatt agrees, \u201cBreathe [&#8230;], we often forget to do that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing is also useful for ensuring your performance is calm and relaxed and not rushed. Josette Simon says, \u201cWhat happens when you get really, really nervous is that things speed up. You are actually speaking faster than you think. It\u2019s incredibly hard to have all those nerves and then just stand, take your time, look around properly and be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is on Your Side<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another source of nervousness may come from worry about how the audience will react to your performance. But, as Spotlight Prize nominee Martha Godber (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I Love You<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) points out, \u201cEveryone is here because they want to find something in you, they want you to do well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just go out on stage, do your best and enjoy the chance to perform. If you have a good time, the audience will have a good time, too. \u201cIn a way, you\u2019ve got to love the nerves,\u201d says Spotlight Prize nominee Luciana Trapman. \u201cBecause if you don\u2019t love the nerves, what are you doing here?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the key to commanding stage fright is confidence. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-industry\/reclaiming-self-confidence-as-an-actor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being confident<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your own ability will only come through practice and is a vital skill to learn as you evolve as a performer.
