{"id":2240,"date":"2023-07-13T14:25:38","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T14:25:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/?p=2240"},"modified":"2026-04-21T15:22:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T15:22:53","slug":"judges-announced-for-spotlight-prize-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/spotlight\/judges-announced-for-spotlight-prize-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Judges Announced for Spotlight Prize 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>We&#8217;re delighted to announce our esteemed panel of judges for this year&#8217;s Spotlight Prize<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/spotlight-prize\/\">Spotlight Prize<\/a> is our annual showcase that helps to launch the careers of outstanding graduates, offering them a platform to raise their profile within the industry and to win a cash prize.<\/p>\n<p>This year one of the 20 graduates nominated by their drama schools will take away the prize for Best Actor (Stage) and Best Actor (Screen), each winning \u00a32000 and join our\u00a0alumni of previous winners.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s judging panel continues to add to our distinguished\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/spotlight-prize-2022-judges\/\">list of former judges<\/a>, which includes actors Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, Jessica Hynes, Susan Wokoma, Alex Jennings, Gemma Chan, Rosamund Pike, Hayley Atwell, and Paapa Essiedu, as well as casting directors Lucy Bevan, Nina Gold, Fiona Weir and Shaheen Baig, to name but a few.<\/p>\n<p>Without further ado, here are the Spotlight Prize 2023 judging panels.<\/p>\n<h4>Stage Judges<\/h4>\n<p>Our stage judges come with a huge wealth of experience across acting, casting, writing and directing. The panel will watch the nominee&#8217;s live performances at the Spotlight Prize and, ultimately, award one nominee the Best Actor (Stage) prize. This year&#8217;s judges are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dorothy Atkinson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"imgLeftSmall\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-replace hoverZoomLink\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/spotlightuk\/image\/fetch\/w_400,c_limit\/https:\/\/spotlight-cmsmedia.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/3307\/dorothy-atkinson-headshot.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/spotlightuk\/image\/fetch\/w_{width},c_limit\/https:\/\/spotlight-cmsmedia.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/3307\/dorothy-atkinson-headshot.jpg\" \/><\/span>Dorothy has a varied career spanning both stage and screen. Her most recent roles include \u2018Betty Boothroyd\u2019 in\u00a0<em>Stonehouse<\/em>,\u00a0directed by Jon S. Baird; \u2018Jeanie Savage\u2019 in\u00a0<em>The Gold<\/em>, directed by Aneil Karia; and \u2018Jessie Cole\u2019 in\u00a0<em>Without Sin<\/em>, directed by Al MaKay. She completed three seasons of\u00a0<em>Pennyworth<\/em>\u00a0as \u2018Mary Pennyworth\u2019 last year, and is well known for her role as \u2018Pauline\u2019 in the BAFTA-winning comedy\u00a0<em>Mum<\/em>, written and directed by Stefan Golaszewski.\u00a0Other recent series include:\u00a0<em>Pistol<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Magpie Murders<\/em>,\u00a0All Creatures Great and Small, and\u00a0<em>Call the Midwife<\/em>. She also worked on several projects with the late, great Victoria Wood, including\u00a0<em>Housewife 49<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>That Day we Sang<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy frequently collaborates with director Mike Leigh, and received BIFA and National Film Awards Best Supporting Actress nominations for her role as \u2018Hannah Danby\u2019 in\u00a0<em>Mr Turner<\/em>. Other films include:\u00a0<em>The Electrical Life of Louis Wain<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Peterloo<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Topsy Turvy<\/em>, and the upcoming\u00a0<em>Saltburn<\/em>, written and directed by Emerald Fennel.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy began her theatre career working with Alan Ayckbourn at Stephen Joseph Theatre. She has since worked on multiple projects at the National Theatre, RSC, West End, and with Kneehigh Theatre\u2019s\u00a0<em>Brief Encounter<\/em>\u00a0in the West End, St Anne\u2019s Warehouse, and at Studio 54 on Broadway.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy is currently filming\u00a0<em>Joan<\/em>, directed by Richard Laxton, and can be seen next in\u00a0<em>The Long Shadow<\/em>, directed by Lewis Arnold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heather Basten<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heather Basten is a casting director for film, TV and theatre. Heather is known for casting the first UK TV series from A24,\u00a0<em>Dreaming Whilst Black<\/em>. Other credits include upcoming Universal Pictures and Blumhouse\u2019s feature\u00a0<em>Speak No Evil<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>House of Spoils<\/em>\u00a0for Amazon Studios.<\/p>\n<p>Theatre credits include\u00a0<em>Beneatha&#8217;s Place<\/em>\u00a0(The Young Vic),\u00a0<em>Every Leaf a Hallelujah<\/em>\u00a0(Regent\u2019s Park Open Air),\u00a0<em>God of Carnage<\/em>\u00a0(Lyric Hammersmith), and\u00a0<em>Red Pitch<\/em>\u00a0(Bush Theatre).<\/p>\n<p>Her casting recognitions include winning a CDG Award, a nomination for a Casting Society of America Artios Award, BAFTA Breakthrough, and being named a \u2018Screen Star of Tomorrow\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Juliet Cowan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"imgLeftSmall\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-replace hoverZoomLink\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/spotlightuk\/image\/fetch\/w_400,c_limit\/https:\/\/spotlight-cmsmedia.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/3308\/juliet-cowan-headshot.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/spotlightuk\/image\/fetch\/w_{width},c_limit\/https:\/\/spotlight-cmsmedia.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/3308\/juliet-cowan-headshot.jpeg\" \/><\/span>Juliet has just wrapped an exciting role on the Amy Winehouse biopic\u00a0<em>Back To Black<\/em>.\u00a0She can most recently be seen as \u2018Barbara Monke\u2019 in Amazon\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Power<\/em>, as well as a strong supporting role for Daisy May Cooper\u2019s\u00a0<em>Am I Being Unreasonable?<\/em>\u00a0on BBC and Hat Trick\u2019s\u00a0<em>Stuck<\/em>, alongside Morgana Robinson. She also starred as \u2018Bel Powley\u2019s mum\u2019 in the BBC series\u00a0<em>Everything I Know About Love<\/em>, and is reprising her role in\u00a0<em>Back To Life<\/em>\u00a0(season 2), as well as\u00a0<em>I Hate Suzie<\/em>,\u00a0starring Billie Piper. In addition, she has recently wrapped on\u00a0<em>Culprits<\/em>\u00a0for Disney+ and a role on\u00a0<em>Flatshare<\/em>,\u00a0which is now out on Paramount+, based on the bestselling Beth O\u2019Leary book.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rosalind Eleazar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"imgLeftSmall\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-replace hoverZoomLink\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/spotlightuk\/image\/fetch\/w_400,c_limit\/https:\/\/spotlight-cmsmedia.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/3309\/rosalind-eleazar-headshot-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/spotlightuk\/image\/fetch\/w_{width},c_limit\/https:\/\/spotlight-cmsmedia.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/3309\/rosalind-eleazar-headshot-3.jpg\" \/><\/span>Rosalind graduated from LAMDA in 2015, and went on to win the Spotlight Prize that same year. She is an elected BAFTA Board member, and is excited about her first US Studio movie appearance, in Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s\u00a0<em>Wonka<\/em>\u00a0later in this year. Tracy is passionate about championing the next generation of artists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Theo Park<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Theo comes from a background in production and agenting. Once an associate of Nina Gold, Theo has cast wide and varied projects such as\u00a0<em>Sightseers<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>High\u00a0Rise<\/em>, both directed by Ben Wheatley;\u00a0<em>Paddington<\/em>, directed by Paul King; and\u00a0<em>Far\u00a0From\u00a0the\u00a0Madding\u00a0Crowd<\/em>, directed by Thomas Vinterberg. Recent film credits include Amazon\u2019s\u00a0<em>The People We Hate at the Wedding<\/em>\u00a0and the Netflix original\u00a0<em>Calibre<\/em>. Recent TV credits include\u00a0<em>Ted\u00a0Lasso<\/em>\u00a0for Warner Bros\/Apple (for which she won an Emmy),\u00a0<em>Master\u00a0of None<\/em>\u00a0(season 3), directed by Aziz Ansari, and Amazon\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivia Scott-Webb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Olivia worked with the director and writer Scott Frank on his acclaimed Netflix TV series\u00a0<em>The Queen&#8217;s Gambit<\/em>\u00a0and with writer and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge on series 2 of her award-winning show\u00a0<em>Fleabag<\/em>. For both of these projects, Olivia received Emmy awards for outstanding casting.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia\u2019s recent credits include Joanna Hogg\u2019s films\u00a0<em>The Souvenir\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The Souvenir: Part II<\/em>,\u00a0the first of which won the World Cinema award at Sundance and starred Honor Swinton Byrne in her first breakout role;\u00a0<em>The Gold<\/em>,\u00a0a BBC and Paramount+ drama series; and the feature film\u00a0<em>Ballerina<\/em>\u00a0for Lionsgate.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia is currently working on Scott Frank&#8217;s new TV series, the second series of\u00a0<em>The Gold<\/em>\u00a0and a feature film for Number 9 Films.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amit Shah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"imgLeftSmall\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-replace hoverZoomLink\" src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/spotlightuk\/image\/fetch\/w_400,c_limit\/https:\/\/spotlight-cmsmedia.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/3311\/amit-shah-headshot.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/spotlightuk\/image\/fetch\/w_{width},c_limit\/https:\/\/spotlight-cmsmedia.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/3311\/amit-shah-headshot.jpeg\" \/><\/span>Amit Shah graduated from LAMDA in 2003, and has worked extensively in theatre, film and TV since. Amit is known for playing a wide range of characters on British television, including troubled pharmacist \u2018Faisal\u2019 in the final series of\u00a0<em>Happy Valley<\/em>, the much-loved regular role of \u2018Fred\u2019 in Phoebe Waller-Bridge\u2019s\u00a0<em>Crashing<\/em>, as well as appearing in Netflix\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Witcher<\/em>, and Philip Pullman\u2019s\u00a0<em>His Dark Materials<\/em>\u00a0for BBC and HBO.<\/p>\n<p>On the big screen, Amit will soon be seen in the upcoming Netflix feature\u00a0<em>Pain Hustlers<\/em>, directed by David Yates. Further film credits include\u00a0<em>Ordinary Love<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Hundred Foot Journey<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Johnny English Strikes Again<\/em>. On stage, Amit has appeared in\u00a0<em>The Alchemist<\/em>\u00a0(National Theatre),<em>\u00a0The Man of Mode<\/em>\u00a0(National Theatre), and\u00a0<em>King Lear<\/em>\u00a0(Donmar Warehouse). He will soon be seen at Chichester Festival Theatre in a leading role in Deborah Frances-White\u2019s debut play\u00a0<em>Never Have I Ever<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachel Sheridan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rachel Sheridan is a casting director working primarily in TV. Recent shows include the upcoming\u00a0<em>Partygate<\/em>\u00a0(Channel 4),\u00a0<em>One Day<\/em>\u00a0(Netflix),\u00a0<em>Men Up<\/em>\u00a0(BBC),\u00a0<em>Such Brave Girls<\/em>\u00a0(BBC), and\u00a0<em>Horseface<\/em>\u00a0(Apple). Previous credits include BAFTA-nominated\u00a0<em>Big Boys<\/em>\u00a0(Channel 4), BAFTA-winning\u00a0<em>In My Skin<\/em>\u00a0(BBC), BAFTA-winning\u00a0<em>The Left Behind<\/em>\u00a0(BBC), and\u00a0<em>Feel Good<\/em>\u00a0(Channel 4).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nathan Toth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nathan Toth is a casting director at Harkin &amp; Toth Casting &#8211; the award-winning casting team behind projects such as\u00a0<em>I May Destroy You<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Industry<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Bastard Son &amp; The Devil Himself<\/em>. Yet to be released projects include an adaptation of Amor Towles\u2019 best-selling novel\u00a0<em>A Gentleman in Moscow<\/em>\u00a0starring Ewan McGregor, and a television prequel to the\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>\u00a0franchise for HBO Max. Nathan started working with Julie Harkin in 2017, and Harkin &amp; Toth Casting was formed in 2022.<\/p>\n<h4>Screen Judges<\/h4>\n<p>Since 2016, leading industry figures have judged screen performances of the Spotlight Prize monologues. Our panel of casting directors have hugely successful careers, working across a varied range of television and feature films and will be awarding the prize to one of the nominees for Best Actor (Screen).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicky Bligh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nicky is an experienced TV and film casting director who has worked with many of the UK\u2019s well-known production companies, including Merman, Roughcut, Baby Cow, Tiger Aspect, Hat Trick, Universal Films, Avalon, BBC Studios and more. She has cast award-winning comedies and comedy-drama shows for broadcasters and SVODS, including ITV, BBC, FX, Channel 4 and Sky.<\/p>\n<p>Recent credits include:\u00a0<em>Dreamland<\/em>\u00a0(Sky\/Merman),\u00a0<em>Things You Should Have Done<\/em>\u00a0(BBC\/Roughcut), the BAFTA-winning\u00a0<em>Stath Lets Flats<\/em>\u00a0(Channel 4\/Rough Cut),\u00a0<em>Buffering<\/em>\u00a0(Avalon\/ITV2),\u00a0<em>Better Things<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 UK casting (FX\/Hulu\/BBC),\u00a0<em>Chivalry<\/em>\u00a0(Baby Cow\/Channel 4 with co-casting director Catherine Willis),\u00a0<em>Bad Education<\/em>\u00a0(Tiger Aspect\/BBC),\u00a0<em>Sandylands<\/em>\u00a0(King Bert\/UKTV), and\u00a0<em>Home<\/em>\u00a0(Channel 4\/ChannelX) &#8211; RTS winner for Best Comedy Performance for Youssef Kerkour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olivia Brittain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Olivia Brittain is a film and TV casting director and associate. She spent close to a decade working with award winning casting director Jina Jay across projects including\u00a0<em>Enola Holmes<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Black Mirror<\/em>\u00a0for Netflix,\u00a0<em>Halo<\/em>\u00a0for Paramount as co-casting director,\u00a0<em>The Night Manager<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Little Drummer Girl<\/em>\u00a0for BBC\/AMC,\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>\u00a0(UK Casting), and\u00a0<em>Rogue One: A Star Wars Story<\/em>\u00a0for LucasFilm. After two years in Seoul working on international casting for South Korean projects, she\u2019s now back in London as a casting freelancer on independent cinema, studio film and shorts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Denise Chamian<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Denise Chamian began her career in the entertainment industry at a boutique agency. It wasn&#8217;t until she started working for luminary casting directors Janet Hirshenson and Jane Jenkins that she found her true calling. From there she went on to start her own company and has worked with such distinguished directors as Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, Tony Scott, Tim Burton, Gore Verbinski, William Friedkin, Michael Bay, Francis Lawrence, and Joseph Kosinski, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>Recent credits include\u00a0<em>The Old Man<\/em>\u00a0(starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow),\u00a0<em>Guillermo del Toro&#8217;s Cabinet of Curiosities<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Elvis<\/em>, for which she won the 2023 BAFTA Film Award for Best Casting. Additional upcoming credits include the Netflix feature film\u00a0<em>Atlas<\/em>, starring Jennifer Lopez and directed by Brad Peyton, as well as the Apple TV+ series\u00a0<em>Chief of War<\/em>,\u00a0starring Jason Momoa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kate Dowd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kate Dowd is an international casting director based in London, with over 30 years experience in the business. Starting her career at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York, she then made her way across the pond to London. After working in both theatre and film in London for several years, she spent five years in Paris working on a number of prestigious US, European and British films. Returning to London, Kate continued to work internationally, and has cast major feature films and television projects.<\/p>\n<p>Her extensive credits include feature films such as\u00a0<em>Finding Neverland<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Kite Runner<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Never Let Me Go<\/em>,\u00a0<em>World War Z<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Book Thief<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Me Before You<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Eye in the Sky<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Official Secrets<\/em>. Other film work as a UK casting director includes:\u00a0<em>Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Bourne Identity<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Gangs of New York<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Moulin Rouge<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Mad Max: Fury Road<\/em>.\u00a0TV credits include: Tom Clancy\u2019s<em>\u00a0Jack Ryan\u00a0<\/em>for Amazon,\u00a0<em>Shantaram<\/em>\u00a0for Apple TV, and the upcoming\u00a0<em>Fallen<\/em>\u00a0for Silver Reel.<\/p>\n<p>She also served as a UK casting consultant for five years on Warner Bros TV and ABC pilot season.\u00a0Upcoming film credits include\u00a0<em>White Bird\u00a0<\/em>(director Marc Forster)\u00a0for Lionsgate, and\u00a0<em>Better Man\u00a0<\/em>(director Michael Gracey).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Victor Jenkins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Victor started his casting career working for Lucinda Syson on feature films\u00a0<em>Troy<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Alexander<\/em>. A little side-step into indie film, working on\u00a0<em>It\u2019s All Gone Pete Tong<\/em>, was followed by the opportunity to be the in-house casting director for Hewland International, where he spent three years, mainly working on Sky One\u2019s football drama\u00a0<em>Dream Team<\/em>\u00a0(seasons 8-10). He then went on to become casting associate to the late Carrie Hilton, and then Gary Davy.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, he set up VHJ Casting with Kelly Valentine Hendry, which cast many multi-award-winning shows, including\u00a0<em>Broadchurch<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Last Kingdom<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Humans<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Wrong Mans<\/em>\u00a0(episodes 2-5), and\u00a0<em>Fleabag<\/em>. Recent film work includes\u00a0<em>The Bubble<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Flowers<\/em>,\u00a0and he\u2019s about to work on his eighth project with director Lewis Arnold. Previous collaborations include\u00a0<em>Cleaning Up<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Dark Money<\/em>, award-winning\u00a0<em>Des<\/em>, and the multi-award-winning\u00a0<em>Sherwood<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside this, he also helms The Casting Office Ltd with fellow CD Andy Brierley. Joint projects include\u00a0<em>The Watch<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Swarm<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Undeclared War<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kirsty Kinnear<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After graduating in Drama from the University of Birmingham and Webber Douglas Academy, Kirsty moved into casting, where she has been working for nearly two decades, predominantly on studio and independent films. Initially an associate to Kate Dowd, she then became associate and later partner to Susie Figgis, who she continues to collaborate with, alongside her own projects. She started her career in film as assistant to producer Larry Franco on\u00a0<em>Batman Begins<\/em>, and was later asked to return on post-production as assistant to Emma Thomas (wife of director Christopher Nolan). From here, Sarah moved into casting, assisting in film (Warner Bros, Universal), TV (BBC, ITV, Channel 4), and theatre in the West End, London.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, she was casting director on\u00a0<em>Past Life<\/em>\u00a0with Emile Hirsch,\u00a0<em>To Wong Foo<\/em>\u00a0by Douglas Carter Beane, George Takei\u2019s\u00a0<em>Allegiance<\/em>, and two East\/Sky TV projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frank Moiselle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frank began his career in casting as casting assistant to Nuala Moiselle on John Huston\u2019s feature film adaptation of James Joyce\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Dead<\/em>. As a casting director, he has worked with acclaimed directors such as Jim Sheridan (<em>The Secret Scripture<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>In America<\/em>), Joel Schumacher (<em>Veronica Guerin<\/em>), Antoine Fuqua (<em>King Arthur<\/em>), Gillies MacKinnon (<em>Tara Road<\/em>), and Neil Jordan (<em>Ondine<\/em>). He also holds a Higher Diploma in Education from the National University of Ireland, University College Dublin, and is a three-time, prime time Emmy nominee for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Susan Shopmaker<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Susan Shopmaker is an independent casting director based in New York City.
