It takes months of preparation and planning to make sure everything runs smoothly, and even then, there\u2019s plenty that can be forgotten or overlooked. Fortunately, there are lots of helpful guides out there \u2013 providing information on everything from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/costing-and-budgeting-for-edinburgh-fringe\/\">costing and budgeting<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/edinburgh-fringe-promoting-and-marketing-your-show\/\">promoting and marketing<\/a>.\u00a0Before you get started, you need to know exactly what you\u2019re bringing to the\u00a0Fringe\u00a0\u2013 and why.<\/p>\n<p>Jonny Patton of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pleasance.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pleasance Theatre Trust<\/a>\u00a0advises,\u00a0\u201cI would always make sure that you\u2019re going into [the Fringe] as prepared as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are his top tips for preparing to perform at the\u00a0Edinburgh Fringe:<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsiveEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embededYoutube\"><iframe id=\"95511743\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bi0Gaf-qBk8?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fspotlight.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2257647_115=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-7=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-12=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-17=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Set your goal(s) for the Fringe<\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019re at the\u00a0Edinburgh Fringe, it\u2019s easy to get swept up in the excitement and be distracted by the hecticness. This is why it\u2019s important to have a set goal \u2013 or goals \u2013 in mind so your time there is focused. It will be impossible to do everything in one visit, so make sure you focus on the key things you want to achieve. Ask yourself what you want to get out of the\u00a0Fringe, and tailor your time towards that.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if your goal is to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfringe.com\/take-part\/artist-development\/future-touring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">build a national tour<\/a>, you\u2019ll want to get national critical response to your show, so getting reviewers from national publications is a must. Spend your time courting these reviewers at the\u00a0Fringe\u00a0and try to get them in to see your show.<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t rush into anything<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfringe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh Festival Fringe<\/a>\u00a0has been running since 1947 and, as the world\u2019s largest performance arts festival, isn\u2019t likely to be cancelled anytime soon. There will always be another\u00a0Fringe\u00a0next year, so don\u2019t feel rushed into putting on a show if you\u2019re not ready.<\/p>\n<p>If you feel like your show isn\u2019t quite ready and that you would benefit from more time to prepare and plan, take it. Ask yourself:\u00a0Is this the right time? Will I be better off taking on this challenge next year?<\/p>\n<p>If you only get one chance to bring your work to the\u00a0Fringe, make sure both you and your show are truly ready for it. If you won\u2019t be performing or taking a show this year, take a look at these\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/5-reasons-to-go-to-the-edinburgh-fringe\/\">five reasons you should still go to the\u00a0Edinburgh Fringe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Keep your show\u2019s turnaround time in mind<\/h3>\n<p>With so many shows to fit in, many venues will have rigid schedules. A typical day for them will alternate between showtime and turnaround time over and over again \u2013 meaning you\u2019re likely to have quite a short turnaround time. What\u2019s more, you\u2019ll have to share that time with the show before you and the show after you. Keep this in mind when you\u2019re planning and thinking about your show.<\/p>\n<h3>Communicate with your venue early on<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfringe.com\/take-part\/putting-on-a-show\/finding-a-venue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Your venue<\/a>\u00a0will want to support your ambition and allow you to bring the show you envision to the\u00a0Fringe, so involve them in the conversation about your technical, stage and other requirements as early as possible. This will give you plenty of time to communicate with their technical team and gives the venue a chance to discuss what your show will involve and how they can help realise that for you.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on what your show involves, this may also impact the venue\u2019s schedule.
