Unfortunately, it\u2019s also very much a \u2018how-long-is-a-piece-of-string\u2019 kind of question, and the answer is likely to depend on several factors like production size, venue, and where you\u2019re travelling from.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever your\u00a0Fringe\u00a0show plans, it\u2019s important to budget within your means. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfringe.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh Fringe Society<\/a>, who organises the festival, notes that they would like to\u00a0\u201cencourage anyone who&#8217;s interested in bringing a show and worried about the financial side to speak to [us] so we can help guide them through that\u2026 We have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfringe.com\/take-part\/putting-on-a-show\/budgeting-and-finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resources on the website<\/a>\u00a0like a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edfringe.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/docs\/participants\/Edinburgh_Festival_Fringe_Budget_Tool.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">budget calculator<\/a>, that can help put some of this together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We spoke to the\u00a0Edinburgh Festival Fringe\u00a0Society\u2019s Matt Lord and Alan Gordon, and Jonny Patton of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trust.pleasance.co.uk\/about_us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pleasance Theatre Trust<\/a>\u00a0about their top tips for budgeting and costing for your show, and the hidden and unexpected costs you should be looking out for.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsiveEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embededYoutube\"><iframe id=\"499404307\" title=\"Costs and Budgeting Tips for the Edinburgh Fringe\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wpYPFN9NFNY?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fspotlight.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2257647_115=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-7=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-12=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-17=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>How much does it cost to put on a show at the Edinburgh Fringe?<\/h3>\n<p>The cost of bringing a show to the\u00a0Edinburgh Fringe\u00a0will vary from show to show and from creative to creative, however, here\u2019s a list of typical expenses you should expect to budget for:<\/p>\n<h4>Registration costs<\/h4>\n<p>Your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfringe.com\/take-part\/putting-on-a-show\/registering#registration-fees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fringe\u00a0registration fees<\/a>\u00a0will vary depending on whether you\u2019re doing a limited or full run and if you\u2019re registering an online or in-person show. You\u2019ll also want to consider ticket commission, and if you want to take advantage of\u00a0EdFringe\u2019s web advertising service.<\/p>\n<h4>Venue<\/h4>\n<p>Edinburgh Fringe Society\u00a0has some venues that are essentially free for performers putting on shows within them, and there are also some venues that can cost a great deal more. It all depends on the infrastructure they\u2019re providing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to check what services the venue will provide, as this will differ from venue to venue. For example, is there a box office at the venue? If not, you\u2019ll have to factor in the extra cost of hiring someone to do that for you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-industry\/ultimate-guide-performing-at-the-edinburgh-fringe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read our tips for researching and picking an Edinburgh Fringe venue.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Accommodation<\/h4>\n<p>This should be one of the primary things you think about as it\u2019s well known to be a very expensive factor of bringing a show to the Fringe. If you\u2019re participating in the Fringe, check out\u00a0EdFringe\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfringe.com\/take-part\/accommodation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh Festival\u00a0accommodation listings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Marketing<\/h4>\n<p>Flyering is a great way to promote a show at the festival, but have you thought about how many hours a day you\u2019ll spend doing it? If you\u2019re busy, and flyering will end up being something else you struggle to juggle, you might want to think about hiring someone to do the flyering for you \u2013 and factor in those costs.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re coming to the festival with the intention of raising your social media profile, or if you\u2019re already quite prominent on social media and want your fans to know you\u2019re performing, you\u2019re likely to spend more on your marketing budget than someone who isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>It all depends on your intentions for your show, so it\u2019s important to have a think about what your goals are as this will affect what marketing plans you put in place and ultimately, how much they will cost.<\/p>\n<h4>Travel<\/h4>\n<p>You\u2019ll need a budget for getting to and from Edinburgh, in addition to travelling around the city once you\u2019re there. People coming from overseas should consider extra costs such as transporting their props, as well as themselves.<\/p>\n<h4>Insurance<\/h4>\n<p>Most venues will request that a company has public liability insurance in place to cover them for anything that falls outside the venue\u2019s insurance. This will also generally cover the company\u2019s time in Edinburgh when they venture outside the venue.<\/p>\n<h4>Production costs and music licensing<\/h4>\n<p>Things can get a bit complicated when it comes to licensing, but fortunately, the\u00a0Edinburgh Fringe Society\u00a0are here to help:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the bits of support we give to companies and venues is that we have an arrangement with PRS, where we administrate the music licensing for the festival on their behalf,\u201d\u00a0says Matt Lord.\u00a0\u201cThat&#8217;s a blanket licensing arrangement, which is really beneficial because it means shows don&#8217;t need to get direct permission from any copyright holder to use a bit of music. You\u2019ll have to actually live in Edinburgh for the duration of the\u00a0Fringe\u00a0preparations \u2013 and everything\u2019s slightly more expensive during the\u00a0Fringe\u00a0\u2013 so you\u2019ll need to budget for this. You may want to take a look at our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/edinburgh-fringe-a-survival-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh Fringe\u00a0survival guide<\/a>\u00a0to get an idea of what to expect.<\/p>\n<h4>Contingency<\/h4>\n<p>There are also likely to be hidden and surprise costs, which is why having a contingency within your budget is something you don\u2019t want to forget. Try to factor in up to a 10% contingency to allow you to have cash to spare for any unexpected fees.<\/p>\n<h4>Show tickets<\/h4>\n<p>Make sure to put aside some budget for tickets to see other shows, too. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t feel super necessary when you\u2019re creating a tight budget,\u201d\u00a0admits Alan Gordon.\u00a0\u201cBut actually, it&#8217;s a really important stage of being able to network, and see what else is out there, and be inspired by the rest of the Fringe landscape. You don&#8217;t want to get too caught up in the bubble of your own show that you don&#8217;t experience the magic out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>How to budget for Edinburgh Fringe<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s safe to say that a lot of people who take a show to the\u00a0Fringe\u00a0for the first time are creatives who have mostly focused on the show and making it. They are not likely to have done the business side of putting on a show before.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t know how much to realistically estimate when budgeting, take a look at a case study of one that is similar to your own show. The\u00a0Edinburgh Fringe Society\u00a0has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfringe.com\/take-part\/putting-on-a-show\/budgeting-and-finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several case studies<\/a>\u00a0that help give you a rough idea of the costs a variety of different shows can accrue. In essence, someone doing a free Fringe is going to have a very different budget to a show put on in a venue for 100 people.<\/p>\n<h4>What is the free Fringe?<\/h4>\n<p>When it comes to venues, some rent out the space and offer a straight fee for you to pay, others do box office splits. Another financial model that has been growing in popularity over the last few years \u2013 and might be ideal if you have a smaller budget \u2013 is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/freefestival.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free Fringe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The free organisations collaborate with pubs, bars, clubs, cafes, and various businesses around Edinburgh, and organise performances into spaces within those businesses. They get the use of these spaces for free, which is beneficial to both you and the business, as the show saves money by not having to hire a venue, and the business gets an increase in footfall. For example, a bar has an audience to sell drinks to.
