And as with any product, marketing yourself well will increase the chances of the right casting director seeing you and offering you your dream role.<\/p>\n<p>But with so many other performers also trying to market themselves, how can you stand out? What is the best way to market your acting career?<\/p>\n<p>According to the casting directors and agents we spoke to, if you have a Spotlight profile, you\u2019re on the right track. We asked them what tips they had for actors looking to market themselves and here\u2019s what they shared:<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsiveEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embededYoutube\"><iframe id=\"162511078\" title=\"How to Market Yourself as a Performer\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8PHQ2Q05MQg?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fspotlight.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2257647_115=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-6=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-11=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-16=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Create a Professional Website<\/h3>\n<p>In order to make casting directors and other industry professionals aware of your past work and experience, you need one place where they can go to easily find all the information they need. A professional actor website is ideal for this.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of free website builders out there \u2013 such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wix.com\/\">Wix<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weebly.com\/?lang=en_GB\">Weebly<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/en-uk\/websites\/website-builder?isc=ukwsbgon1&amp;countryview=1&amp;currencyType=GBP&amp;cdtl=c_20433045978.g_155792355521.k_kwd-59397160.a_671991204235.d_c.ctv_g&amp;bnb=&amp;gad=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwjOunBhB4EiwA94JWsFT3PdP6FCKU8y5XOA9FtvOj4Pn4DOJvTx19TgE_Arexf_hl26nF0hoCDg8QAvD_BwE\">GoDaddy<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and you don\u2019t need to have advanced computer skills to use them. Most will come with pre-set templates you can use.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve created a website, it\u2019s important to fill it with suitable information and not over-complicate it. Agent Richard Cook advises actors to,\u00a0\u201cJust keep it simple,\u201d\u00a0and include information along the lines of, \u201cHello, my name is [x]. I\u2019m an actor. I\u2019m living here. Click onto this, this and this to see my work.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Overly Rely on Social Media<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/5-tips-for-effective-social-media\/\">Social media<\/a>\u00a0can be a useful tool for networking, connecting with other creatives and promoting yourself, but it shouldn\u2019t be the sole thing you rely on for marketing. Casting director Lucinda Syson CDG admits,\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t use Twitter [because] I prefer to go to one source [of information] and know what I\u2019m getting from that source.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Social media also comes with various restrictions on what you can post and how \u2013 which may get in the way of marketing yourself in the way that you want. This is why it\u2019s also a good idea to have a professional website or profile, where you have total control over the design, what content is displayed and how the information you provide is interacted with.<\/p>\n<p>Social media is a great way of showing you\u2019re active and present within the acting community, but a website \u2013 or even your Spotlight profile \u2013 will let casting directors know you\u2019re professional and give them a guaranteed place to go when they need certain information about you. Lucinda Syson agrees, saying\u00a0\u201cOn the Spotlight page, I should know their height. I should know their skills. I&#8217;d be able to see a showreel, photos.\u201d\u00a0As opposed to your Twitter feed, which could contain a film review one day and a photo of your cat the next.<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Stop Developing Your Acting Skills<\/h3>\n<p>Successful marketing will hopefully result in more auditions and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-self-taping-updated\/\">self-taping<\/a>\u00a0opportunities for you \u2013 but there\u2019s no point getting these opportunities if your acting is sub-par and not going to earn you the role. This is why casting director Nancy Bishop CSA warns,\u00a0\u201cActors need to concentrate on the work before the marketing. [Sometimes] they\u2019re marketing too much when they should be working on their craft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marketing is fun and exciting, especially when it involves social media, so don\u2019t let the hard work of honing your craft fall to the wayside during the process. Keep practising, keep learning and when that opportunity comes around, you\u2019ll be at your best to take it.<\/p>\n<h3>Keep your Spotlight Profile Up-to-date<\/h3>\n<p>Casting director Thom Hammond advises,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s worth remembering that, as an actor, you live on Spotlight.\u201d\u00a0Casting director Amy Hubbard CDG adds,\u00a0\u201cI would expect everyone to be on Spotlight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spotlight is the tool that casting professionals use to find suitable actors for their roles. It exists specifically to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/spotlight\/tips-to-help-be-found-in-spotlight-search\/\">make casting searches as simple as possible<\/a>. By ensuring your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/25-ways-to-raise-your-spotlight-profile\/\">Spotlight profile is up-to-date<\/a>\u00a0and populated with important information, it\u2019s the easiest way of marketing yourself and being found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour photos and that CV and those credits and skills and showreel is the most important thing that you and your agent can use,\u201d\u00a0Thom stresses.\u00a0\u201cAnd it\u2019s the most useful thing for me, and that\u2019s what\u2019s going to get you through the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to spend some time going through your Spotlight profile to make sure all this information is present and then set yourself a time each week or month (depending on how busy your schedule is) to keep it updated.<\/p>\n<p>Every bit of information you include on your Spotlight profile is searchable to casting professionals, so the more you include, the more likely you are to have that one skill,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/spotlight\/tips-for-spotlight-profile-credits\/\">credit<\/a>\u00a0or feature that they\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks to Richard Cook, Lucinda Syson CDG, Nancy Bishop CSA and Amy Hubbard CDG for their advice.
