However, thanks to the surplus of A-list celebrities being cast in voice roles for their \u2018star power\u2019, there\u2019s an untrue expectation that voice work will be easy. After all, it\u2019s ultimately just speaking \u2013 and you do that every day. But voice overs take just as much training and practise as any other acting skill.<\/p>\n<p>We spoke to Christopher Holt, vocal coach and senior lecturer at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonmet.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London Metropolitan<\/a>; Joe Windley, Head of Voice at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rada.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RADA<\/a>; and Jacky Davis, voice artist and director, about the physical and mental challenges of honing your voice as a tool, common challenges faced by actors \u2013 along with the importance of working with your unique needs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsiveEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embededYoutube\"><iframe id=\"48967769\" title=\"Everything You Need to Know About Voice Work\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JP-5GI96HYs?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fspotlight.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2257647_115=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-7=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-12=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-17=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Getting Started with Voice Work<\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to voice overs, Joe Windley advises,\u00a0\u201cIt starts off with trust, it starts off with fun, it starts off with creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Actors must be willing to listen to and take advice from their vocal coach, and they should try to enjoy the process of finding their voice\u2019s unique qualities. After all, every voice is different.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly though, Joe says,\u00a0\u201c[It helps if you are] interested in how people speak, which [is] endless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just as an actor learns by watching other actors perform, a voice artist must take an interest in how voice is used \u2013 both in voice over work and in everyday life. Listening for these daily nuances is key to understanding how to vary your voice and make your delivery sound realistic.<\/p>\n<h3>Essential Must-Dos for Honing Your Voice<\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve set your mind on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/getting-started-as-a-voice-actor\/\">becoming a voice over artist<\/a>, you need to start practising and honing your voice. Here are three must-do tips to help improve your voice work:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. Overcome Your Shyness<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As Christopher Holt says, \u201c[Being] seen on stage is one thing, but to be seen and heard is another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not daunted by addressing an audience, you may feel self-conscious when delivering voice over alone in a room. Either way, overcoming this shyness is vital for good delivery.<\/p>\n<p>When working as a vocal coach and senior lecturer, Christopher encourages his students to use singing to get past the feeling of shyness. It doesn\u2019t have to be good singing \u2013 you\u2019re training for voice over, not the West End. Vary Your Voice<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As an actor, you can rely on your looks, acting talents, and sound to sell yourself as a performer and create a brand. Voice over artists only have their sound, so it\u2019s important to be able to do a variety of different voices instead of relying on just one.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Windley warns,\u00a0\u201cIf you make your voice a logo, you\u2019ve only really got one expressive choice, and that\u2019s unlikely to sustain you for a whole career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So be a \u2018vocal octopus\u2019 and play with what your voice can do. Adapt to a Different Space<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When you\u2019re an actor performing on a stage, you\u2019ll be projecting your voice to fill a room and reach the hundreds of people in the audience. But when you\u2019re recording a voice over, it\u2019s just you and the microphone. Your audience will be listening to you from the comfort of their home, perhaps on their own. As Jacky Davis points out, \u201cYou\u2019re telling that one person or just those couple of people, rather than being in a theatre where you\u2019re telling a few hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This means that you\u2019ll be delivering your lines in a different way to on stage. You won\u2019t need to rely on projecting, and the end result of your performance will likely be more intimate than what an audience would get from a theatre performance, so keep this in mind.<\/p>\n<h3>The Don\u2019ts of Voice Work<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to focus on ways of improving your voice as a tool, but this can all be for nothing if you don\u2019t also know what you shouldn\u2019t be doing. Here are three things to avoid:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. Don\u2019t Consume Certain Food and Drink<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Before you use your voice, there are certain things you should avoid eating and drinking to ensure your vocal quality is good. Jacky Davis advises,\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t have any coffee or chocolate or milk or any fizzy drinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These types of drinks are said to affect your voice in a negative way.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. Don\u2019t Skip Warming Up Your Voice<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On days when you know you\u2019ll be using your voice, always make sure you warm up first.
