10 quick and easy things you can do to make your credits more searchable and appealing to casting professionals.<\/h4>\n

You may not realise, but all the information you enter in your credits section on Spotlight is searchable. Casting professionals can choose to search by role, production, production company, director and year, so it\u2019s important to ensure your information is spelled correctly, entered in the right place, and formatted in a way that\u2019s easy for them to search through.<\/p>\n

Here are 10 things you can do right now to ensure your credits help you get found:<\/p>\n

1. Put \u2018Singer\u2019 or \u2018Dancer\u2019 as your role instead of \u2018Singing\u2019 or \u2018Dancing\u2019<\/h4>\n

If you can\u2019t remember what your role was, or it wasn\u2019t specified, it may be tempting to put what you did instead. However, things like \u2018Singing\u2019, \u2018Dancing\u2019 or \u2018Juggling\u2019 are more likely to be searched as skills rather than roles. \u2018Singer\u2019, \u2018Dancer\u2019 or \u2018Juggler\u2019 is much more likely to be searched for.<\/p>\n

2. Think about the words casting professionals are more likely to search for<\/h4>\n

When entering your role, don\u2019t just think about explaining it or being informative – think about the important words a casting professional is more likely to search for. For example, \u2018Singing School Child\u2019 or \u2018Lead Dancing Boy\u2019 are more useful than \u2018Girl playing with dolls in the garden\u2019. A casting professional in unlikely to be using the word \u2018garden\u2019 in their
\nsearches.<\/p>\n

3. Don\u2019t put speech or quotation marks around your production names<\/h4>\n

This may make your credits look presentable and help divide up information such as episode titles and campaign names, but having unnecessary speech and quotation marks can actually prevent your productions from coming up in a casting director\u2019s search results. Of course, if these marks are part of the production title, make sure to include them.<\/p>\n

4. Ensure Director names are spelled correctly<\/h4>\n

The name of the director is a very popular search that casting professionals perform on Spotlight, so it\u2019s vital to enter the full name whenever possible and ensure it is spelt correctly. If the director\u2019s name is \u2018John Smith\u2019, simply putting \u2018J. Smith\u2019 or just \u2018John\u2019 will hinder your chances of being found in this type of search.<\/p>\n

5. Add the brand name as a \u2018production company\u2019 for commercials<\/h4>\n

If you didn\u2019t make a note of the director and production company at the time, this information can be difficult to find later. However, if you don\u2019t want to leave the \u2018production company\u2019 field empty, you should add the brand name. It fills out the credit, making it look better on your profile, and will also make you appear in appropriate searches.<\/p>\n

6. Put theatres\/venues in the \u2018production company\u2019 field<\/h4>\n

Currently, Spotlight does not have a field for theatres\/venues when it comes to stage credits. We hope to change this soon, but in the meantime, we would recommend that you put theatres in the \u2018production company\u2019 field. Casting professionals are most likely to search for them there. It will also help the production name stand out more as the only piece of information in capitals.<\/p>\n

7. Put choreographers, producers, and other names in the \u2018directors\u2019 field<\/h4>\n

Generally, casting professionals will use the \u2018production company\u2019 field to search for companies, and the \u2018directors\u2019 field to search for names. So even though the choreographer or producer isn\u2019t technically the director, their names should still go in here. If you want todifferentiate them from the director, you can add their profession in brackets after their name.<\/p>\n

8. If you put \u2018Various\u2019 specify what this means<\/h4>\n

When a credit has a lot of directors, production companies or roles, you have two options:
\nTake the time to list all the information you can fit in, knowing that each word is acting as search criteria for that credit. Decide that search criteria doesn\u2019t matter for this particular credit. You\u2019re happy for it to exist purely to pad out your profile and make you look experienced. In the case of the second option, you will likely put \u2018Various\u2019 or \u2018Multiple\u2019 in the director, production company or role field. However, \u2018Various\u2019 isn\u2019t very informative to casting professionals at a glance. To help give them context, and to make your profile look neater, ensure you put \u2018Various Roles\u2019, \u2018Various Companies\u2019 or \u2018Various Directors\u2019.<\/p>\n

9. If you\u2019re running out of space in a field, use \u2018&\u2019 and \u2018\/\u2019<\/h4>\n

Each field has a maximum word count, and sometimes it\u2019s not possible to fit all the information in with perfect formatting. In these cases, we recommend that you replace \u2018and\u2019 with \u2018&\u2019, and commas with \u2018\/\u2019. The \u2018\/\u2019 is particularly helpful, as you won\u2019t need to include a space after it, like you would with a comma. It saves you space and also makes your credits look neat and professional.<\/p>\n

10. Avoid repetition. Casting professionals don\u2019t have time for repetition, so avoid it<\/h4>\n

For each credit you enter, you must select a \u2018production type\u2019. This has no effect on the credit\u2019s search-ability, so avoid entering a credit multiple times as a \u2018stage\u2019 production and a\u2018musical\u2019 production. The information will come up in appropriate searches either way. Furthermore, if you choose the production type as a \u2018musical\u2019, you don\u2019t then need to write \u2018Annie the musical\u2019 as the production name. It\u2019s already identified as a musical. This extra information will make your credit long and wordy. The same goes for credits entered as \u2018voice over\u2019. Adding your role as \u2018Voice Over\u2019 will mean the information is repeated in the credit.<\/p>\n
