{"id":1459,"date":"2022-08-08T12:04:40","date_gmt":"2022-08-08T12:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/?p=1459"},"modified":"2026-03-16T08:25:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T08:25:34","slug":"how-to-manage-imposter-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/lifestyle-wellbeing\/how-to-manage-imposter-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Imposter Syndrome and How to Manage It"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Spotlight&#8217;s Mental Health and Wellbeing manager explains what imposter syndrome is and offers techniques to help you deal with it.<\/h3>\n<p>Imposter syndrome is one of the most common topics that I coach performers on. I\u2019m fascinated by it &#8211; having also struggled with it myself for many years. Feelings of uncertainty are an expected and normal part of everyday life and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/so06.tci-thaijo.org\/index.php\/IJBS\/article\/view\/521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an estimated 70% of people experience \u2018imposter\u2019 feelings at some point in their lives<\/a>. But the great news is that you can learn to manage it.<\/p>\n<h4>What is imposter syndrome?<\/h4>\n<p>Imposter syndrome &#8211; the idea that you\u2019ve only succeeded due to luck, and not because of your talent or qualifications &#8211; was first identified in 1978 by psychologists Pauline Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes.\u00a0It can loosely be defined as a pattern of self-doubt where we\u00a0doubt our abilities and feel like a fraud. Even the word \u2018imposter\u2019 conjures feelings of being unsure, uncertain or anxious. Add to that the medical undertone of \u2018syndrome\u2019 and the terminology feels neither helpful nor empowering.<\/p>\n<h4>Our mind is trying to help us<\/h4>\n<p>You\u2019re probably familiar with the term \u2018inner critic\u2019 (IC) or \u2018saboteur\u2019. If you\u2019ve watched\u00a0RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race\u00a0then you\u2019ll know that RuPaul often uses this phrase to console queens when he thinks they&#8217;re self-sabotaging. Self-doubt is the fuel of the inner critic.\u00a0When we take a risk or step out of a comfort zone, it&#8217;s like an inner alarm goes off, waking up the inner critic, who is desperately trying to maintain the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>The inner critic\u00a0is designed to ensure our survival and hates change because\u00a0our minds are designed to keep us safe. The\u00a0IC will have all the reasons\/beliefs\/assumptions\/perspectives to help maintain the status quo &#8211; and this shows up as a pattern of self-doubt which we call \u2018Imposter Syndrome\u2019. The more \u2018on purpose\u2019 the idea\/thing\/situation is, the louder the IC will become. So the sign of the IC can indicate you are doing something that is important to you.<\/p>\n<h4>The language and behaviour of the inner critic<\/h4>\n<p>To manage self-doubt, we have to master the language and behaviours of the inner critic. You might recognise it as insecure thoughts such as \u2018is this the right thing?\u2019, \u2018What will others say?\u2019, \u2018If I do it this way, then a lot of problems and challenges will come up\u2026\u2019 The language we use is often a great indicator of how we\u2019re feeling about something.<\/p>\n<p>Other inner critic signs include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Binary thinking<\/strong>:\u00a0When the IC is in charge there\u2019s usually no room for grey, everything is black or white, either great or awful.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The voice of \u2018reason\u2019<\/strong>:\u00a0The IC argues for what might\u00a0seem\u00a0to be in your best interests e.g\u00a0\u2018but if you put yourself out there then you\u2019ll be judged, ridiculed, etc.\u2019<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The voice of \u2018you aren\u2019t good enough\u2019<\/strong>:\u00a0thoughts like \u2018I need more time, I need another degree, I need more experience, I\u2019m not very good at X Y Z\u2026\u2019<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">T<strong>he voice of perfectionism<\/strong>:\u00a0It hates mistakes and doing things \u2018wrong\u2019, i.e. if you can\u2019t do it perfectly don\u2019t do it at all. It\u2019s also the voice of body perfectionism: \u2018I\u2019m not attractive enough&#8217;, \u2018I need to lose weight\u2019 etc.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The tape<\/strong>:\u00a0The negative voice that is constantly on a loop in your head.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The broken record<\/strong>:\u00a0The IC will come up with new lines from time to time but it also tends to rehash a few core narratives and beliefs it has been repeating to you for decades.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The one-two punch<\/strong>:\u00a0It attacks you with critical thoughts before shaming you for having them (for example &#8211; \u2018why is everyone else more successful than me when they\u2019re less talented\u2019 (binary thinking), followed by \u2018maybe I\u2019m not very talented after all\u2019).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The IC may take inspiration from critical people in your life: such as a parent, sibling, colleague, or from cultural narratives or expectations.<\/p>\n<h4>How to manage self-doubt<\/h4>\n<p>We can\u2019t get rid of self-doubt completely, but these four steps will help you recognise and acknowledge the inner critic and not take direction from it:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Acknowledge thoughts and feelings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask yourself: does that thought help or hinder me? Is it even true? What\u2019s my reaction when I believe that thought? Who would I be without it? This acknowledgement cannot be underestimated because it immediately creates separation between you and the IC. Remember that you are not your thoughts &#8211; you\u2019re the person having the thoughts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Learn to think like a non-imposter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By valuing constructive criticism and seeing the bigger picture, we strengthen our connection to what I call our \u2018Inner Leader\u2019. It\u2019s the part of us that is wise, compassionate, has clarity and always honours your truth. The Inner Leader knows how to make those life a\ufb03rming choices which lead us to the fullest experience of our lives. I also recommend listening to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/interviews-podcasts\/powerful-pause-meditation-with-bea-grist-inner-leader\/\">this visualisation<\/a>\u00a0to get more acquainted with this part of yourself<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Share your feelings with someone you trust<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are able to navigate this industry with more confidence and take risks when we have a \u2018secure base\u2019. Your secure base is made up of the people who we know at our core will support us. They don\u2019t seek to problem solve but are able to listen with empathy. To identify your secure base, you may like to reflect on these questions. Who listens attentively? Who holds back from trying to fix it? Who knows how to mirror back how you\u2019re feeling? Who is available and returns messages reliably?<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Mindfulness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mindfulness is the practice of simply noticing what\u2019s occurring in the present moment. The IC\u2019s narrative (and insecurities) are nearly always associated with past thoughts or future fears. When we focus our full attention on the present moment, we are less likely to become overwhelmed and we can respond to self-doubt rationally rather than reacting to it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember that beliefs are just well-practised thoughts and we can choose to practice generating thoughts that are empowering and positive. Self-doubt happens to most of us, but by noticing when the inner critic rears its head and putting the above into practice, I hope you are better able to avoid taking direction from it.
