{"id":1449,"date":"2022-07-19T15:21:14","date_gmt":"2022-07-19T15:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/?p=1449"},"modified":"2026-04-24T12:10:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T12:10:17","slug":"spotlight-prize-2022-judges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/spotlight\/spotlight-prize-2022-judges\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotlight Prize 2022 Judges Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>We&#8217;re delighted to announce our esteemed panel of judges for this year&#8217;s Spotlight Prize.<\/h2>\n<p>The annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/spotlight-prize\/\">Spotlight Prize<\/a>, originally launched in the 50s, helps to launch the careers of outstanding graduates, offering them a platform to raise their profile within the industry and to win a cash prize.<\/p>\n<p>This year one of the 19 graduates nominated by their drama schools will take away the prize for Best Actor (Stage) and Best Actor (Screen), winning themselves \u00a32000 and joining a\u00a0glittering alumni of previous winners.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>This year\u2019s judging panel continues to add to our distinguished list of former judges, which includes actors Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, Alex Jennings, Gemma Chan, Rosamund Pike, Hayley Atwell, and Paapa Essiedu, as well as casting directors Lucy Bevan, Nina Gold, Fiona Weir and Shaheen Baig, to name but a few.<\/p>\n<h3>Stage Judges<\/h3>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Our stage judges come with a huge wealth of experience across acting, casting, writing and directing.\u00a0The panel will watch the nominee&#8217;s live performances and, ultimately, award one nominee the Best Actor (Stage) prize. This year&#8217;s judges are:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Michael Balogun<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Michael most recently appeared in Netflix\u2019s\u00a0<em>Top Boy<\/em>, where he played the memorable role of Cyprus opposite Kano. He can also be seen in great guest roles in BBC One\u2019s\u00a0<em>You Don&#8217;t Know Me\u00a0<\/em>and ITV\u2019s\u00a0<em>Vera<\/em>. Before that, he starred in a successful tour of\u00a0<em>Blue\/Orange\u00a0<\/em>in a new adaptation of the brilliant play, opposite Giles Terera.<\/p>\n<p>During lockdown, Michael led the one-man show\u00a0<em>Death of England: Delroy\u00a0<\/em>at the National Theatre, directed by Clint Dyer, to rave reviews. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled after its opening night due to the national lockdown returning. However, Michael\u2019s very short run gained attention due to his ferocious performance and was hailed by many as \u2018a star turn\u2019, garnering him a nomination for Best Male Actor in a play at The Black British Theatre Awards. Prior to this, Michael filmed a guest role in Epix\u2019s\u00a0<em>War of the Worlds<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>His other theatre credits include\u00a0<em>Macbeth\u00a0<\/em>at Chichester Festival Theatre, the UK tour of\u00a0<em>Barbershop Chronicles<\/em>, directed by Rufus Norris at the National, and the UK tour of\u00a0<em>People, Places and Things<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4><strong>Aisha Bywaters (CDG)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Aisha won the BAFTA TV Craft Award for Scripted Casting in 2022 with\u00a0<em>We Are Lady Parts\u00a0<\/em>for Working Title\/NBCU. Her other TV credits include\u00a0<em>The Baby\u00a0<\/em>for Sister Pictures and HBO\/Sky, Netflix\u2019s\u00a0<em>Man vs Bee\u00a0<\/em>and Working Title\u2019s adaptation of Dolly Alderton\u2019s\u00a0<em>Everything I Know About Love\u00a0<\/em>for the BBC. Aisha\u2019s film credits include the critically acclaimed\u00a0<em>The Last Tree\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>County Lines<\/em>. Her directorial debut,\u00a0<em>The Fight<\/em>, which she also starred in, was nominated for a BIFA award and won a Welsh BAFTA for Cinematography.<\/p>\n<p>Her theatre credits include\u00a0<em>Far Away\u00a0<\/em>(Donmar Warehouse),\u00a0<em>The Norman Conquests\u00a0<\/em>(Old Vic), for which she was nominated for a Tony Award for the Broadway transfer, and\u00a0<em>The Night Heron\u00a0<\/em>(Royal Court), for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4><strong>Hannah Miller (CDG)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Hannah has been head of casting at the Royal Shakespeare Company since 2008. Having studied drama at the University of Hull in the mid-90s, presenting shows in Edinburgh and the National Student Drama Festival, she went to work at Cheek by Jowl, followed by the National Theatre as a casting assistant. She then moved to the RSC as deputy casting director and was a casting director for the Birmingham Rep before returning to the RSC. Hannah works regularly in drama schools and industry organisations, advising actors on professional development, resilience and demystifying the casting process. She is a trustee of Northampton Theatres Trust and Tamasha.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4><strong>Talulah Riley<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Actress, author, and director Talulah Riley is best known for her roles as Angela in HBO&#8217;s Science Fiction series\u00a0<em>Westworld\u00a0<\/em>(2016-2019), Mary Bennett in\u00a0<em>Pride &amp; Prejudice\u00a0<\/em>(2005), and for her starring role in\u00a0<em>St Trinian&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>(2007) and its sequel\u00a0<em>St Trinian&#8217;s: The Legend of Fritton&#8217;s Gold\u00a0<\/em>(2009).<\/p>\n<p>Thus far, 2022 has been a landmark year for Talulah, who was recently seen in Danny Boyle&#8217;s eagerly anticipated TV miniseries\u00a0<em>Pistol\u00a0<\/em>(for FX and Disney+) playing the role of iconic designer Vivienne Westwood.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her role in\u00a0<em>Pisto<\/em>l, Talulah&#8217;s second novel\u00a0<em>The Quickening<\/em>\u00a0was published by Hodder &amp; Stoughton on 23rd June 2022. Set in a near-future Britain that is ruled exclusively by women,\u00a0<em>The Quickening\u00a0<\/em>is a thrilling dystopian tale of gender, power and betrayal. Riley&#8217;s debut novel\u00a0<em>Acts Of Love\u00a0<\/em>was published by Hodder &amp; Stoughton in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Riley&#8217;s other film credits also include\u00a0<em>Inception<\/em>\u00a0(2010) alongside Tom Hardy,\u00a0<em>Love &amp; Distrust<\/em>\u00a0(2010) alongside Robert Pattinson and, in 2015 she made her directorial debut with\u00a0<em>Scottish Mussel<\/em>, which she also wrote and starred in. Other television credits include\u00a0<em>Poirot<\/em>\u00a0(2003),\u00a0<em>Marple<\/em>\u00a0(2006),\u00a0<em>Doctor Who<\/em>\u00a0(2008) and\u00a0<em>Nearly Famous<\/em>\u00a0(2007). Riley made her stage debut in\u00a0<em>The Philadelphia Story<\/em>\u00a0at the Old Vic in 2005 and also performed in a 2006 revival of Tennessee Williams&#8217;\u00a0<em>Summer And Smoke<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4><strong>Susan Wokoma<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Susan is an actor, writer and soon-to-be first-time director. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Susan has gone on to appear in films such as\u00a0<em>Enola Holmes<\/em>, the upcoming\u00a0<em>Enola Holmes\u00a0<\/em>sequel,\u00a0<em>The Beautiful Game\u00a0<\/em>(later in 2022), and\u00a0<em>Half of a Yellow Sun<\/em>. Her television credits include\u00a0<em>Cheaters, Toast of Tinseltown, The House, Rules of the Game, Year of the Rabbit, Truth Seekers, Dark Money, Crazyhead, Crashing, Porters\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Chewing Gum<\/em>. Susan has performed in many renowned theatres, including the National Theatre, the Bush, the Royal Court, Regent\u2019s Open Air Theatre, St Ann\u2019s Warehouse in New York, the Crucible in Sheffield and, most recently,\u00a0<em>Teenage Dick\u00a0<\/em>at the Donmar Warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Susan wrote, starred in and produced an award-winning short film called\u00a0<em>Love the Sinner\u00a0<\/em>(Sky\/Roughcut). She has written on shows such as\u00a0<em>The Reluctant Landlord\u00a0<\/em>(Sky), been in the writers room for\u00a0<em>Sex Education<\/em>\u00a0series 2 (Netflix), and will make her directorial debut with the feature film\u00a0<em>Three Weeks<\/em>\u00a0(BBC\/BFI\/Dorothy Street Pictures), which she also wrote and will star in. Susan is a patron of charity\u00a0The Monobox, and is also a regular co-host of the hit comedy podcast\u00a0<em>The Guilty Feminist<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3>Screen Judges<\/h3>\n<p>Since 2016, leading industry figures have judged screen performances of the Spotlight Prize monologues. Our panel of casting directors have hugely successful careers, working across a varied range of television and feature films and will be awarding the prize to one of the nominees for Best Actor (Screen).<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4><strong>Deborah Aquila (CSA)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>After graduating from NYU&#8217;s Tisch School of the Arts and Stella Adler Conservatory, Deborah worked on the first two seasons of\u00a0<em>Miami Vice\u00a0<\/em>and several feature films, including Michael Mann&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Man Hunter<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Pope of Greenwich Village<\/em>, as an associate. Her independent casting director career began with Steven Soderbergh&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Sex, Lies and Videotape\u00a0<\/em>and Uli Edel&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Last Exit to Brooklyn<\/em>. Before moving to Los Angeles in 1993 to cast Frank Darabont&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Shawshank Redemption<\/em>, Deborah had completed over 18 independent films in New York.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993, she was named Senior Vice President of Features Casting for Paramount Pictures. During her nine-year tenure at the studio, Deborah cast such notable films as\u00a0<em>Primal Fear, Mission: Impossible II, Double Jeopardy, Varsity Blues, The Brady Bunch, Kiss the Girls, Mother<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>What Women Want<\/em><em>.<\/em>\u00a0In March of 2020, Deborah returned to Paramount as Executive Vice President of PTVS Casting.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Most recent film credits include\u00a0<em>CODA, Cherry, The Tomorrow War, La La Land, Wonder, Stronger, Deep Water Horizon<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Woman in Gold<\/em><em>.<\/em>\u00a0Television credits include the critically acclaimed Showtime series\u00a0<em>Dexter,\u00a0<\/em>FX\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Shield<\/em>, and TNT\u2019s\u00a0<em>Mob City<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Deborah is a proud member of the CSA and has been nominated 18 times by the Casting Society of America for the Artios Award, winning for the features\u00a0<em>Red, My Week With Marilyn, La La Land<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>CODA<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>In 2003, Deborah was recognised by the Hollywood community with the Hollywood Film Festival Career Achievement Award. In 2020, Deborah was recognised with the CSA\u2019s Hoyt Bowers\u2019 Award for Career Achievement, and in 2021, the Sundance Film Festival honoured\u00a0<em>CODA\u00a0<\/em>with the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast.<\/p>\n<p>Deborah has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1994.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4><strong>Rich Delia (CSA)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Rich Delia is a casting director based in Los Angeles and the owner of Rich Delia Casting. Rich is a proud member of the Casting Society of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He is a nine-time Artios Award Nominee, winning in 2015 for the film\u00a0<em>Dallas Buyers Club<\/em>, and in 2022 was nominated for a BAFTA award for the film\u00a0<em>King Richard<\/em>. Additional credits include\u00a0<em>IT\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>IT Chapter 2, Game Night, Short Term 12, The Disaster Artist,\u00a0<\/em><em>Happiest Season<\/em>\u00a0and the upcoming DC films\u00a0<em>The Flash, Black Adam\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Shazam 2.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4><strong>Tracey Gillham (CDG)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"page\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Tracey trained in production at the BBC, working in the comedy department where she was lucky enough to join the production teams of many great shows, including\u00a0<em>Only Fools and Horses<\/em>. Eventually becoming the casting director for BBC Comedy, Tracey cast shows, including\u00a0<em>Jonathan Creek, Miranda, The Office, Extras<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Psychoville.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since setting up Tracey Gillham Casting in 2012, she has worked on shows including\u00a0<em>Inside No.9, Code 404, The Larkins, The Cleaner, After Life, Sally4Ever, Catastrophe, Back, Not Going Out, Benidorm<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>the\u00a0<\/em><em>Murder on The Blackpool Express\/Murder They Hope<\/em>\u00a0series.
