Read the Scenes You\u2019re Given<\/h3>\n<p>Before an audition, you should thoroughly read any sides you\u2019re given to pick up clues about the mood of the scene. Bella Ramsey (<em>The Last of Us<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Game of Thrones<\/em>) does exactly that and notes,\u00a0\u201cYou often don&#8217;t get the whole script initially, so figuring out the tone of the scene is the first thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>2. Prepare, and Then Relax<\/h3>\n<p>Toheeb Jimoh (<em>Ted Lasso<\/em>) gets ready for auditions by doing as much preparation as he can, but caveats that,\u00a0\u201cPrep usually depends on how much time I have.\u201d\u00a0He suggests,\u00a0\u201c[starting with] the go-to stuff like objectives [and] obstacles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To help you\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-essentials\/creating-compelling-characters\/\">create your character<\/a>\u00a0and understand what motivates them, think about what they want or need, and what\u2019s standing in the way of reaching that objective. How does this influence your character&#8217;s actions and emotions?<\/p>\n<p>Laura Donnelly\u2019s (<em>The Nevers<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Ferryman<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Outlander<\/em>) advice is to\u00a0\u201cBegin the work as soon as you can.\u201d\u00a0She continues,\u00a0\u201cThe more sleep I have on it, [the more] you can be relaxed going into the room.\u201d\u00a0She adds that if you\u2019re short on time when it comes to submitting a self-tape, do as much preparation as you can but\u00a0\u201cRelaxation is the key [so that] you can be fresh and improvise and hopefully do something different\u201d\u00a0when you\u2019re recording.<\/p>\n<p>Before stepping into an audition room,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/user\/spotlightuk\/playlists\">listening to music<\/a>\u00a0can help set your mood. Harry Trevaldwyn (<em>The Bubble<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The King<\/em>) works this into his pre-audition routine and says,\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll listen to Pink or something peppy.\u201d\u00a0Music can also be helpful for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/interviews-podcasts\/tips-for-controlling-nerves\/\">controlling performance nerves<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0something a lot of the Spotlight Prize finalists spoke about when we asked them how they deal with pre-performance jitters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/lifestyle-wellbeing\/powerful-pause-meditation-with-bea-grist-pre-audition\/\">Listen to our pre-audition meditation<\/a>\u00a0to help you feel calm and confident before going into the room.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Bring Yourself the Part<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cDepending on what the project is, you get a sense or a vibe of the character,\u201d\u00a0says Toheeb Jimoh,\u00a0\u201cand then the rest is just bringing myself to it.\u201d\u00a0This is something Bella Ramsey agrees on. When it comes to auditions she adds, \u201cI try to bring myself to it. It has to feel like it&#8217;s coming from within me rather than I&#8217;m trying to force it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>4. Be Inspired by Other Performers<\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to self-taping, Rob Brydon confesses,\u00a0\u201cI&#8217;m not very good at it,\u201d\u00a0but suggests watching\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UqHh6TvGQIQ\">Hugh Laurie\u2019s legendary self-tape for\u00a0House<\/a>\u00a0for inspiration. Brydon says,\u00a0\u201cI think that&#8217;s the holy grail of self-tapes. You look at that and you see how much he&#8217;s giving it. He&#8217;s not jumping through hoops, but he&#8217;s doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/?tags=self-taping\">advice and tips about self-taping<\/a>,\u00a0if you need any help.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Believe in Yourself and Show What You Can Do<\/h3>\n<p>Oliver Jackson-Cohen (<em>The Invisible Man<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Haunting of Hill House<\/em>) thinks that when it comes to auditions and self-tapes,\u00a0\u201c[the] most important thing is for actors to believe in what they do and present that.\u201d\u00a0He continues,\u00a0\u201cIt doesn&#8217;t really matter what the character is or what you think they&#8217;re looking for, do what you would do. It might not be right, it might not be what they [casting directors] want, but at least you can stand by the work that you give out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Be confident and believe in yourself \u2013 take a look at these\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-industry\/reclaiming-self-confidence-as-an-actor\/\">tips for building self-confidence as an actor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Be Confident That You Can Do the Job<\/h3>\n<p>Our final piece of advice comes from Asim Chaudhry (<em>Hoff The Record<\/em>,\u00a0<em>People Just Do Nothing<\/em>) who says,\u00a0\u201cAuditions [are] like a test and don&#8217;t always give you a good kind of example of what someone can do. Someone can be nervous, someone can be loads of things on the day,\u201d\u00a0but if you can demonstrate that you can do the job, the audition may not be the be-all-and-end-all.<\/p>\n<p>Chaudhry goes on to share his audition experience for\u00a0<em>Black Mirror<\/em>,\u00a0\u201cI didn&#8217;t really know my lines.
