With television being one of the most accessible forms of media, it can be a first experience for many people of seeing queer characters and relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no wonder that many people under the LGBTQ+ umbrella speak of the impact certain television characters have had on their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are eight of the most iconic LGBTQ+ roles in television, the actors and actresses who portrayed them and the reasons they\u2019ve become such popular and beloved characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. \u2018Willow Rosenberg\u2019 (Alyson Hannigan) \u2013 <i>Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buffy the Vampire Slayer <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developed a queer following from early on in its run, thanks to its relatable themes of female empowerment and \u2018high school is hell\u2019. It wasn\u2019t until Season 4 that the show fully embraced queer representation by having one of its main characters \u2013 the computer nerd and witch, \u2018Willow Rosenberg\u2019 (Alyson Hannigan) \u2013 fall in love with another woman, fellow witch \u2018Tara Maclay\u2019 (Amber Benson).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduced at a time when lesbian representation was still rare in mainstream television, Willow quickly became a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thethirlby.com\/camp-thirlby-diary\/2020\/7\/27\/willow-rosenbergs-coming-out-story-still-makes-my-lesbian-heart-soar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beloved icon for sapphic women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. \u2018Sophia Burset\u2019 (Laverne Cox) \u2013 <i>Orange is the New Black<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orange is the New Black <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">served as one of Netflix\u2019s original flagship shows, running for seven seasons and garnering several Emmy awards. One of the breakout characters on the show was \u2018Sophia Burset\u2019 (Laverne Cox), who would go on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sophia, a transgender woman imprisoned for credit card fraud, quickly gained a following among fans of the show for her wit and sympathetic backstory and became one of the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/laverne-cox-on-oitnb-and-representing-the-trans-community-61625\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instantly recognisable trans characters in television<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. \u2018Eric Effiong\u2019 (Ncuti Gatwa) \u2013 <i>Sex Education<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex Education <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became an immediate hit for Netflix when the show debuted in 2019, in part due to the overwhelmingly positive response to the character, \u2018Eric Effiong\u2019 (Spotlight member, Ncuti Gatwa).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduced as the best friend of protagonist \u2018Otis\u2019, Eric was given his own storylines independent of Otis\u2019s problems, allowing the show to follow his tumultuous relationship with his high school bully and delve into how he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goatsandsoda\/2021\/10\/14\/1045332656\/sex-educations-gay-teen-eric-takes-a-risky-trip-to-nigeria-how-realistic-is-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reconciled his sexuality and the culture of his religious Ghanaian-Nigerian family<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. \u2018Ianto Jones\u2019 (Gareth David-Lloyd) \u2013 <i>Torchwood<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBC\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torchwood, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctor Who <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spin-off aimed at older teens and adults, was unafraid to embrace queer themes from its early days. One way in which these themes were explored was through the developing relationship between \u2018Captain Jack Harkness\u2019 (John Barrowman) and \u2018Ianto Jones\u2019 (Spotlight member Gareth David-Lloyd).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ianto\u2019s role was expanded from earlier episodes thanks to the cult following that developed around the character \u2013 especially regarding his bisexuality and blossoming relationship with Jack. His death in the third series of the show was met with widespread upset from fans and a shrine dedicated to the character was erected in the show\u2019s setting of Cardiff Bay, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ianto%27s_Shrine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which still exists today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5. \u2018Will Truman\u2019 (Eric McCormack) \u2013 <i>Will &amp; Grace<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most successful television shows with a principal cast of queer characters, NBC sitcom <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will &amp; Grace <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is widely credited for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thestateofsie.com\/edward-schiappa-will-grace-contact-hypothesis-psychological-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improving public opinion of the LGBTQ+ community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The titular \u2018Will Truman\u2019 (Eric McCormack) received a mixed reception in the early seasons, but many fans felt he was a positive depiction of a gay man who did not conform to stereotypes and he was praised for his compassionate nature and loving friendship with \u2018Grace Adler\u2019 (Debra Messing). The popularity of the character and the show led to Eric McCormack winning an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>6. \u2018Anne Lister\u2019 (Suranne Jones) \u2013 <i>Gentleman Jack<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Anne Lister\u2019 is unique among the figures on this list as she is based on a real person \u2013 an English diarist dubbed \u2018the first modern lesbian\u2019 by scholars. Brought to life by Suranne Jones in the BBC\/HBO series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gentleman Jack, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the show <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/culture\/tvfilm\/a-love-letter-to-gentleman-jack-19th-century-lesbian-bbc-queer-hero-b989432.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gained an instant queer following<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for its depiction of a gender non-conforming lesbian in a lead role \u2013 a rare occurrence, especially in period dramas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the show was unfortunately cancelled after its second season, it received critical acclaim and maintains a dedicated fanbase.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>7. \u2018Villanelle\u2019 (Jodie Comer) \u2013 <i>Killing Eve<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The breakout character of BBC series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Villanelle\u2019, was introduced as a psychopathic, bisexual assassin obsessed with British intelligence agent, \u2018Eve Polastri\u2019 (Sandra Oh). Both the character and Spotlight member Jodie Comer\u2019s performance drew instant acclaim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being a villain, Villanelle has been praised for her well-rounded characterisation, which allowed for a complex, layered relationship to develop between her and Eve over the course of four seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>8. \u2018Shane McCutcheon\u2019 (Katherine Moennig) \u2013 <i>The L Word<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon its debut in 2004, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The L Word <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broke new ground as the first mainstream television series to feature an ensemble cast made up of almost entirely queer female characters. One of them was \u2018Shane McCutcheon\u2019 \u2013 an androgynous lesbian portrayed by Katherine Moennig.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shane <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/the-l-word-shane-mccutcheon-oral-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quickly became a sex symbol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among fans of the show, with a long string of lovers due to her reluctance to commit to a relationship.
