As a casting director specialising in the format, I\u2019ve seen first-hand how thoughtful casting shapes the emotional core of these productions and elevates audience engagement\u2026 and it\u2019s where I\u2019ve found some of the most powerful, moving and meaningful work of my career.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s a historical drama or a modern story where families of the real people may be watching, casting with respect and authenticity is everything. I look for thoughtful, natural, layered performances. It\u2019s not about lookalikes. It\u2019s about emotional truth. Actors often get the chance to reveal lesser-known sides of familiar stories. That\u2019s a fascinating responsibility and one that takes emotional intelligence and openness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve heard plenty of, \u201cThey don\u2019t do docudrama,\u201d from agents over the years, but the truth is not all drama-docs are created equal.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been lucky to work with brilliant directors and showrunners, working from powerful scripts with epic production ambitions and shooting with cinematographers whose work is stunning. These productions look incredible. The drama is absolutely on par with full drama, so I&#8217;ll always say to actors, please read the scripts, look at what the story is saying and set aside past assumptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Great Storytelling <i>is<\/i> Great Storytelling<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drama-docs are winning BAFTAs and Emmys. They\u2019re giving focus to untold histories and overlooked people. They\u2019re bringing a fresh lens to old stories, engaging new audiences to history they might not have felt was relevant to them. Some are shining a light on injustices of the past, looking for answers and calling for action. It\u2019s a genre worth taking seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In drama-docs, we get to honour real stories with integrity. Casting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m002hpcj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disaster at Sea: The Piper Alpha Story<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was one of the most humbling jobs I\u2019ve done. The series centred around the Cullen Inquiry, with actors on screen voicing verbatim testimony from the men who survived that night. It couldn\u2019t be theatrical. It had to be honest and true. That kind of material demands actors who get the weight of what they\u2019re doing. Some productions allow more stylised performance and that\u2019s great too (we&#8217;ve had a lot of fun with some epic shows!), but with real-life trauma, we have to strip everything back and get the tone right. These stories deserve nothing less.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A Unique Opportunity for All Actors<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drama-docs are a brilliant space for emerging actors. Often, high-profile casting doesn\u2019t feel right and that opens the door to fresh, exceptional talent of all ages. So, we\u2019re meeting new talent all the time, which is about as good as it gets for a casting director (and hopefully welcome news to actors worried that we call the same agents\/actors in every time. We don&#8217;t).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, there\u2019s a real buzz when we bring in actors who\u2019ve never considered the genre before. Casting Charles Dance as \u2018Michelangelo\u2019 for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renaissance: The Blood and the Beauty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dir. Emma Frank, BBC Two) was a proud moment. And the first time I realised he looks <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like my Dad as Michelangelo!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drama-documentaries are both demanding and creative, with the power to surprise everyone involved. With exceptional casts attached, we are bringing to life everything from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.co.uk\/shows\/gunpowder-siege\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gunpowder Plot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to America\u2019s Founding Fathers, while championing pioneers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mubi.com\/en\/gb\/films\/the-ballad-of-olive-morris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olive Morris<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b0b5y4zg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Suffragettes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
