It\u2019s the trailer that showcases you \u2013 and your talent \u2013 and can help make a first impression on casting directors. If a picture is worth a thousand words, just imagine how much your acting showreel says about you.<\/p>\n<p>A bad showreel, however, can have the opposite effect, which is why understanding what casting professionals are looking for in a showreel is vital \u2013 as is avoiding the common mistakes that actors make.<\/p>\n<p>We asked members of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecdg.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the\u00a0Casting Directors\u2019 Guild (CDG)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.castingsociety.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casting Society of America (CSA)<\/a>, about what should be included in a showreel, along with tips on how actors can improve their reels.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsiveEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embededYoutube\"><iframe id=\"744002006\" title=\"Everything You Need to Know About Showreels - Updated Video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SSLbXrJssxQ?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fspotlight.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2257647_115=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-7=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-12=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-17=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>What is a showreel in acting?<\/h3>\n<p>An acting showreel is video material of a performer acting on camera, so that casting professionals can get a better idea of who they are as an actor and what they can do.<\/p>\n<p>As Thom Hammond of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hammondcoxcasting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hammond Cox Casting<\/a>\u00a0says, \u201cIt\u2019s not about having a great film showreel [or] lots of television drama. [&#8230;] It\u2019s just having something that we can see of you on camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember that an acting showreel should be simple and practical. It isn\u2019t a short film \u2013 it doesn\u2019t need to be beautiful or have music. Thom stresses that it just needs to be,\u00a0\u201cSome quick, accurate video.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>How long should an acting showreel be?<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s recommended that you don\u2019t have too much footage on your showreel. Frank Moiselle CSA advises that,\u00a0\u201cTwo minutes is long enough, three minutes is plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Casting professionals are busy people and won\u2019t have time to sit through showreels that are much longer than this.<\/p>\n<h3>What scenes should you include in a showreel?<\/h3>\n<p>When putting together your showreel, Lucinda Syson CDG advises,\u00a0\u201cYou do need, where possible, to gear the showreel around yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other than that, casting professionals recommend that you include the following:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Strong Opening<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As with anything, you want to hook those watching your acting showreel right from the very beginning, so Victor Jenkins CDG recommends that you should, \u201cAlways start with your best piece of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only will this ensure that your best performance is seen, but it will also make the casting director want to watch the rest of your showreel, too.<\/p>\n<p>Give casting directors what they want to see and dazzle them with your acting talent from the start. Kelly Valentine Hendry CDG says,\u00a0\u201cI don&#8217;t like having to skip through three or four minutes in order to find somebody&#8217;s best work.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Recent Acting Material<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lucinda Syson CDG says,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s good to have as much material of recent times [as possible], don\u2019t make it all old material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Footage from productions you\u2019ve recently worked on will show casting professionals that you\u2019re currently working and in demand.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Your Best Acting Work<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This may seem obvious, but a showreel shouldn\u2019t be a compilation of every piece of your acting work. It\u2019s a highlight reel of your best performances; an advert with the aim of selling yourself as an actor to the casting professional watching. Rachel Desmarest stresses, \u201cDon\u2019t put all the stuff you\u2019ve ever done into one showreel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Your aim, Priscilla John CDG reminds us, is to include,\u00a0\u201cSomething that makes [us] want to see more.\u201d\u00a0Similarly, April Webster CSA urges actors to only include,\u00a0\u201cGood material, the best of, even if it\u2019s one short scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Be picky with the footage you have. Think about what each clip you include says about you as an actor, and make sure it\u2019s your best acting work. Kahleen Crawford CDG warns,\u00a0\u201cThere may be some things that you\u2019d love to have on there, but be quite brutal with yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>What Shouldn\u2019t You Include in a Showreel?<\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve put together the perfect acting showreel using the advice above, here are some common and easily avoided mistakes that you should check you haven\u2019t made:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Don\u2019t Use Montages and Music<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The point of your showreel is to showcase your acting skills \u2013 not what you can do with editing software on a computer. So, avoid including a montage in your acting showreel. As Thom Hammond says,\u00a0\u201cMontages are all about editors, good showreels are all about actors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And he isn\u2019t the only casting director who dislikes them.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Jenkins CDG asks for, \u201cNo montages, because we don&#8217;t want to scroll through them,\u201d\u00a0and April Webster CSA adds,\u00a0\u201cI would rather there\u2019s more time for the scenes, so I can get a nice variation of different roles that you may have played.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, adding music to your showreel will take away from your performance. Jane Anderson CDG stresses,\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t care what you look like to music,\u201d\u00a0and Frank Moiselle CSA agrees:\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t need a montage of musical stuff. I need the scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keep this in mind when putting together your showreel. Montages and music are, in Kelly Valentine Hendry CDG\u2019s words,\u00a0\u201cJust a waste of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Make Sure it\u2019s Clear Who You Are in a Scene<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You should make sure you\u2019re only including scenes that focus on you and the character you\u2019re playing in your showreel. With only a small window to catch a casting professional\u2019s attention, you don\u2019t want them to spend it wondering where you are in a busy scene.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean you should start editing other people out of your scenes. One other person that you\u2019re talking to is fine. The important thing, as Debbie McWilliams CDG says, is that you,\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t confuse [your showreel] with a scene with lots of other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Don\u2019t Include Scenes That Don\u2019t Show You at Your Best<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you feel like your acting showreel isn\u2019t long enough, padding it out with footage where you\u2019re not at your best won\u2019t help. Sharon Bialy CSA says,\u00a0\u201cIf you don\u2019t have two or three scenes, one good one is enough, and that\u2019s really all you need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Luci Lenox advises,\u00a0\u201cIf you haven&#8217;t got good material, never show anything that&#8217;s not going to show you in a favourable light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a performer with only a few usable scenes, don\u2019t use them just for the sake of having a showreel. If you\u2019re selling yourself short, it\u2019s better not to have one at all.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Upload Your Showreel to Spotlight<\/h3>\n<p>To upload a showreel to\u00a0Spotlight, all you need to do is:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Sign into your\u00a0Spotlight\u00a0account using your registered email address and password.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Open the left-hand menu by clicking on the three horizontal lines icon at the top of the page (it may already be open), and then click \u2018Video\u2019 under the \u2018Manage media\u2019 heading.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0You should now be on the showreel management page. To add a new showreel, click \u2018Add showreel\u2019 and then \u2018Confirm\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Click on \u2018Click to select a file or drag here\u2019, and then select the showreel from where it is stored on your device.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Don\u2019t forget to add a title (such as \u2018Doritos Commercial\u2019 or \u2018Dance reel\u2019) so that casting professionals have some context for what they\u2019ll be watching.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Finally, click \u2018Save changes\u2019.
