{"id":1362,"date":"2023-04-18T10:37:33","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T10:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/?p=1362"},"modified":"2025-01-08T11:19:19","modified_gmt":"2025-01-08T11:19:19","slug":"dealing-with-rejection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/the-industry\/dealing-with-rejection\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for Dealing with Rejection"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Performers Bella Ramsey, Jennifer Saunders, Laura Donnelly, Rob Brydon, Toheeb Jimoh, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Asim Chaudhry share their advice for dealing with rejection.<\/h2>\n<p>We caught up with some of our guest-presenters at this year\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/news\/winners-of-the-cdg-casting-awards-2023\/\">CDG Awards<\/a>, and asked them how they handle rejection as actors, along with what advice they\u2019d give to others when it comes to dealing with knockbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what they had to say:<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsiveEmbed\">\n<div class=\"embededYoutube\"><iframe id=\"337580034\" title=\"How to Handle Rejection\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eJ1uBcX8DHc?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fspotlight.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2257647_115=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-7=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-12=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-17=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>It\u2019s Not Personal, It\u2019s Just Business<\/h3>\n<p>Nobody enjoys getting rejected, and never does it feel more personal than in the creative industry. When you deliver someone a performance that you\u2019re proud of, it can feel soul-destroying to receive a rather impersonal \u2018no.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>However, as Toheeb Jimoh (<em>Ted Lasso<\/em>) says: \u201cA \u2018no\u2019 isn\u2019t necessarily about you.\u201d\u00a0He reminds us, \u201cThere\u2019s a multitude of different reasons why it could be a \u2018no\u2019&#8230; it\u2019s not just about [you] not acting hard enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is echoed by Bella Ramsey (<em>The Last of Us<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Game of Thrones<\/em>), who adds,\u00a0\u201cOften it\u2019s not that you weren\u2019t good enough, it\u2019s just that you weren\u2019t right for that role, or you didn\u2019t fit in with the rest of the cast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to recognise this so we don\u2019t beat ourselves up over all the things we think we did wrong. Take a look at our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/lifestyle-wellbeing\/dealing-with-self-pity\/\">advice for dealing with self-pity<\/a>\u00a0if you need something to re-motivate you, or our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/overcoming-self-judgment-as-an-actor\/\">advice for overcoming self-judgment<\/a>\u00a0if you\u2019re struggling to not blame yourself.<\/p>\n<h3>Everybody Gets Rejected at Some Point<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cEven actors at the very, very top of their game are still experiencing [rejection] to some degree,\u201d\u00a0says Laura Donnelly (<em>The Nevers<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Ferryman<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Outlander<\/em>), and she\u2019s not the only one who thinks it\u2019s important for performers to keep this in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Saunders (<em>Absolutely Fabulous<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Allelujah<\/em>,\u00a0<em>French &amp; Saunders<\/em>) stresses,\u00a0\u201cEveryone gets rejected. You\u2019ll find the biggest stars in the world will get rejected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Asim Chaudhry (<em>Hoff the Record<\/em>,<em>\u00a0People Just Do Nothing<\/em>), it\u2019s a matter of being aware that other people will not be open about their own rejections.\u00a0\u201cI think I handle rejection very well because I\u2019ve been rejected many, many times in my life,\u201d\u00a0he says.\u00a0\u201cI think that\u2019s true for most people, it\u2019s just that we don\u2019t see the losses, do we? We only see the wins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it helps to know that everybody is on the same page,\u201d\u00a0Laura Donnelly agrees.<\/p>\n<p>If you struggle when you see actors posting about their successful auditions, our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlight.com\/news-and-advice\/how-to-deal-with-career-envy\/\">advice for dealing with career envy<\/a>\u00a0may be useful for you.<\/p>\n<h3>It Gets Easier With Time<\/h3>\n<p>It may sound clich\u00e9, but handling rejection should get easier with time. This may come about from you getting used to it, or as Rob Brydon (<em>Marion and Geoff<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Gavin &amp; Stacey<\/em>) puts it,\u00a0\u201cYou develop a very thick skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It may be that you learn to let it go once it\u2019s over, as Bella Ramsey does. She says,\u00a0\u201c[Rejection is] something I\u2019ve got used to. It\u2019s got to the point now where I do an audition or I do a self-tape, and then I put it out of my mind. Don\u2019t shout and rage with the casting professional who\u2019s given you the bad news, as you never know what future opportunities they may keep you in mind for.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver Jackson-Cohen (<em>The Invisible Man<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Haunting of Hill House<\/em>) has experience of this, and shares,\u00a0\u201cI&#8217;ve had plenty of moments where\u2026 right at the last minute, you don&#8217;t get [the job]. Those relationships have then come back round years later and turned into something even more fruitful.
